Sure, the US Constitution asserts the right for any religion to build a facility, even if it’s in a location that instigates, insults and disrespects the sacred plot where almost 3000 people were slaughtered in an act of cowardly terrorism.
Fine. Americans have to deal with this all the time.
As a firm believer and follower of our Constitution, I will never say "they can’t build it". I will, however, protest and argue, in an attempt to influence public opinion, perhaps applying enough pressure to force them to build it elsewhere.
I will ALSO advocate acts of reciprocation, similar to those shown below…
I’m not sure if these are artfully crafted jokes and hoaxes, but equally authorized, it would be interesting to see if the Mosque builders would 1) do nothing 2) hypocritically complain about the lack of sensitivity or 3) move the Mosque.
Reciprocation #1 – In the spirit of General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing’s Spanish-American war tactic, Rancor News has announced that Bumble Bee Ham is declaring their intent to build a Pork processing plant in smell-shot proximity to the Mosque. Of course, Rancor News is a humor website, but this is a creative idea. After all, NYC’s Meat Packing district is in Chelsea’s 13-14th street area, about 1.8 miles away.
Reciprocation #2 – Build a Gay Bar very close to the Mosque property, catering to Islamic gay men. I’ve heard the argument that "there are dozen and dozens of Mosques in NYC, so what’s the big deal?" Well, there are probably just as many gay bars in NYC too. Like them or not, both parties have equal right to build their establishments.
I’d love to see either of these reciprocations become reality. Then, the builders of this mosque can experience the true American sensation of having to bite your lip, while someone exercises their right to crudely offend you.
