Conservative Congressman Steve King (R-IA) took part in a whirlwind tour of New Hampshire yesterday, speaking with and endorsing Jennifer Horn for Congress in our 2nd district.
For those who couldn’t make it, you really missed a spectacular Statesman talking about our government’s issues, and his plans to reverse them (there may eventually be some video for you on this at www.GraniteGrok.com).
The tour started in Concord at 10am with bagels and politics, moved on to Keene for a lunch meet-and-greet, then to Nashua City Hall at 3:30pm for a classic Town Hall. Jennifer and Congressman King were greeted by crowds of 50-60 in the first two locations, and about 85 in Nashua. After this, a private reception was held in Nashua, with another 50-60 in attendance.
The thing I really want to share from these events was a story the Congressman told. It was his plan to repeal Obamacare. Admittedly, the Congressman doesn’t get much sleep these days, and this plan manifested itself deep in the middle of the night.
First, he acknowledges the legion of naysayers who tell him, “we can’t repeal Obamacare now, we don’t have any majorities in Congress!” His response to this cry is that he understands this obvious fact, but we first need to set a “benchmark”, having as many Republicans as possible sign a petition, demanding the repeal of this law (sure, symbolic at best – for now). He instructed us to use this petition as a “litmus test”, identifying which Republicans to support, and which to remove this coming November.
The next step, he continued, comes when we secure a majority in either the House or Senate in November. First, we submit a bill to repeal in the House (where he feels we will have a majority); that’s another litmus test. If it doesn’t pass the Senate, that’s yet another. Both should be used in the 2012 elections.
In 2012, he plans to have that bicameral majority, and to pass the repeal in both houses, between the dates that new members of Congress are sworn-in and the Presidential Inauguration. However, sending the bill to outgoing President Obama at that point would result in a guaranteed veto that would require an override (his plan doesn’t necessarily assume a lofty 2/3 majority in both houses).
So, rather than submitting the passed bill to outgoing President Obama, he would wait until Inauguration Day. The incoming, Conservative Republican President will take the oath of office with pen-in-hand. Upon completing the oath, s/he will lower said hand and SIGN the bill into law, effectively repealing “Obamacare” in the presence of former President Obama, former Vice-President Biden, and former Congressional leaders Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid (if he’s even there in 2012).
Does this sound far-fetched? Maybe, but it was inspirational and this Congressman surely has some aggressive plans. You have to give him a lot of credit for thinking way, way outside the box. I like his special blend of creativity and vengeance, don’t you?
