But I urge the committee to consider a couple of deeper, less obvious consequences, not just of passing a bill like this, but of even bringing it up for consideration. The first is that a bill like this undermines respect for the very rule of law itself. After all, if the legislature isn’t going to respect the limits placed on it by the NH Constitution, then why should individuals respect the limits placed on them by that legislature — whether regarding guns, or schools, or traffic laws, or anything else?  If we’re going to disregard the big rules, why pay any attention to the smaller ones?

…then why should we, regular citizens, learn from our “betters” and ignore it as well?  We are all supposed to be equal before the law – and that should apply to those “behind it” as well. A court officer with the powers of a judge in Oregon who federal officials claim helped an illegal alien drunk driver escape being detained by immigration officials has been identified.

On Monday, Breitbart News reported that a “judicial referee” at Portland’s Multnomah County Courthouse was accused of interfering with the apprehension of an illegal alien who had appeared in her court on a drunk driving charge. That court officer has now been identified as Judge Monica Heeranz. It is now being reported that Heeranz allowed 22-year-old Diddier Pacheco Salazar escape the custody of immigration officials after his case in her court was concluded.

Stupidity.  If you know that you are illegal, and make it public, and make it well known that you are going to speak in public at a certain time and place, you are Stupid.  You are also Stupid if you didn’t listen to the political campaign of now President Donald Trump who basically said one thing over and over and over again:

About two weeks ago, Daniela Vargas hid in the bedroom closet of her Jackson, Miss., home after watching immigration officials handcuff her father in the family’s driveway. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained the 22-year-old’s father and brother, Argentines who were living in the country illegally, amid the Trump administration’s aggressive deportation effort that has riled immigrant communities across the country.

Yeah, she was really dreaming that things would stay the same as they were under Obama (that immigration laws were all but abolished for the sake Open Borders).  He made it clear that The Rule of Law came before any SJW illegal alien advocacy.  What was she (and her father and brother) thinking???

The target may have been President Trump, but the derision was meant for the people who elected him. Nothing says “oops” like ridiculing your audience.

F.U.D Factor – Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt.  The Police Chief’s Association here in NH has made all too clear that they hate the idea that law abiding citizens no longer have to come before them on bended knee to ask permission to wear a coat over a gun worn at one’s hip.  Here, Laconia Police Chief make it QUITE clear – he (and others) don’t trust us:

“I’m opposed to it,” said Laconia Police Chief Chris Adams. The process for acquiring a concealed carry permit, he said, “gives an added level of protection.”  Adams said he has processed hundreds of concealed carry permits per year since he became chief, and has only declined a handful of applications. He might deny an application because of mental health problems or the applicant’s criminal history, especially regarding drug use or sales.

Or, like in the case documented here on GraniteGrok, denied a license simply because Michelle Levell (current Chair of the NH Womens Defense League) refused to put more information on the Pistol/Revolver license application than legally required.  Not because of a criminal history, not because of mental illness – the power-went-to-his-head chief decided his requirements trumped that of the legal form.  Paperwork.  And cost Michelle thousands in court fees just for the judge to yell at said chief.

Back to Adams, the Laconia Chief.  Now, either before or after the passage of SB12, there was no legal requirement to inform the police, if stopped, if you were packing.  None at all.  So what is his parting words on the subject?
