Until this year, 1914 was the least active Atlantic Basin hurricane season on record. I know, on record doesn’t mean much. If the Earth is 4 billion years old, the absence of 3.9999999999… billion years’ worth of records makes any predictions or remembrances appear insignificant. And so they are, but what interests me isn’t how 1926 has so far had no hurricanes (six storms but no hurricanes), it is what happened in 1915 or 1916.
The green chicken littles have been hyping the super El Niño as the reason why the 2026 season is so calm. What they’ve neglected to admit is that the El Niño is more powerful than your emissions or their lousy predictions.
Without abundant carbon-based energy, modern human flourishing doesn’t happen. The same energy allowed us to find newer, better ways to do just about everything, including reducing exhaust and improving modern air quality. None of it is more powerful than natural phenomena that have managed what we call the weather for more years than we have records.
It all begs the question: what did Mother Nature do after 1914?
In 1915, six tropical storms were reported, five of which became hurricanes.
One of the most significant storms of the season was the Galveston hurricane. It was the strongest tropical cyclone to make landfall in the United States since the 1900 Galveston hurricane. This storm caused devastation across the Greater Antilles, before making landfall in Texas as a Category 4 hurricane on the modern-day Saffir–Simpson scale, the first system to strike the United States at that intensity since the 1900 Galveston hurricane.
2027 could/should be similar, or maybe not, but we should consider the possibility, since 1916 had 18 cyclones, nine of which made landfall.
Ten of the tropical storms intensified into a hurricane, while five of those became a major hurricane.[nb 1] The early 20th century lacked modern forecasting tools such as satellite imagery and documentation, and thus, the hurricane database from these years may be incomplete.
I’ve been saying it for a while. We’re due.
