Tuesday is Veto Day at the State House — and September 8 is just 25 days away. This week, Cornerstone is urging lawmakers to override Governor Ayotte’s vetoes on two key biological sex bills, and working to make sure you head to the polls informed. Here is what you need to know.
Veto Day Is Tuesday — Tell Your Rep to Override
On Tuesday, August 19, the New Hampshire House of Representatives holds Veto Day — a special session in which lawmakers vote on whether to override the Governor’s vetoes from the past legislative year. An override requires a two-thirds majority in both chambers. It is lawmakers’ last opportunity to send a vetoed bill into law over the Governor’s objection.
Cornerstone is urging overrides on two bills that would require New Hampshire to recognize biological sex:
- SB 552 — Would allow state agencies to recognize biological sex, to protect women’s spaces, and to ensure accurate record-keeping across state government.
- HB 1442 — Would protect the privacy and safety of women and girls in locker rooms, bathrooms, and similar facilities at publicly funded institutions.
Both bills passed the legislature with strong support. Both were vetoed by Governor Ayotte. Tuesday is the chance to make them law anyway.
What You Can Do
Contact your state representative and ask them to vote to override the vetoes on SB 552 and HB 1442. Use the button below to find your legislator and reach out before Tuesday, August 19.
Your Vote on September 8 — Make It Count
With just over three and a half weeks until the New Hampshire state primary, the race is speeding up. For many districts in New Hampshire, the September primary determines who will win in November — meaning your primary vote may be the most important one you cast this cycle.
Cornerstone has surveyed non-incumbent House and Senate candidates across the state on the issues that matter to Christian families. Our legislative scorecard — tracking how incumbents voted on our core issues — is also coming soon for your review. Our work to produce an endorsement list will give you a clear picture of where every candidate stands before you vote.
What you can do right now:
- Find your sample ballot — the easy way to see exactly who is running in your district is to pull up your town or city clerk’s sample ballot. Use the NH Secretary of State’s voter lookup tool to find your clerk and polling place information.
- Watch for Cornerstone’s scorecard and endorsement list — coming soon.
- Make a plan to vote on September 8.
- Going to be out of town? Request an absentee ballot through the NH Secretary of State’s office.
