Morning Update: Me Too?

Today, on the Morning Update, Cate Blanchett had some thoughts about Me Too, and Hollywood movie sets that didn’t make a heck of a lot of sense to me. And while using power and influence as leverage for sex is always wrong, this wasn’t about that.

Welcome to your Tuesday, May 19th, 2026, morning update. Cate Blanchett is an incredibly versatile and accomplished actress. She’s really good at her job, pretending to be other people, other things. But she’s not so good at this

Cate Blanchett has lamented that the Me Too movement got killed very quickly in Hollywood while speaking at the Cannes Film Festival.

In a wide-ranging staged conversation on Sunday, Blanchette lamented that the tide of Me Too has been turned in Hollywood, where she has been outspoken about gender equality. It got killed very quickly, which I think is interesting, said Blanchette.

Except that # MeToo wasn’t about gender and occupation. ⁓ Wasn’t about male-dominated workspaces.

It was about “what became”a decidedly partisan, one-sided headhunting witch hunt sort of a thing. ⁓ Like an expedition willing to ignore the sexual malfeasance of certain partisan political people in powerful positions. That’s a lot of P’s. It’s a movement that expressed zero interest in the Epstein files until somebody suggested that maybe Donald Trump was in there. And

They had four years under Biden while he was rotting behind the Resolute Desk to release them all and they didn’t release any. So anyway, no interest, zero until Trump came along. And Me Too, as I said, was never about men or women in certain occupations.

Here’s Blanchette again.

I’m still on film sets, and I do the headcount every day. There’s 10 women and there’s 75 men every morning, Blanchette said. I love men, but what happens is the jokes become the same, she said. You just have to brace yourself slightly and I’m used to that. But it just gets boring for everybody when you walk into a homogenous workplace. I think it has an effect on the work.

I don’t know, you’re getting five to seven million dollars per film, I guess. That’s a small price to pay for that sort of environment.

But on the subject matter of homogenous workspaces, registered nurses and nurse practitioners, up to 90 % women, preschool and kindergarten teachers, 97 % women, and elementary and middle school teachers, as high as 80 % women.

dental hygienists, 96 % women, speech language pathologists, 94 % women, social workers and mental health counselors, up to 85 % women, home health aids, personal care aids and nursing assistants, up to 90 % women, dieticians and nutritionists, 90 % women.

Child care workers, up to 95 % women, occupational therapists and physical therapists, 85 % women, pharmacy technicians, 80 % women. So none of those women apparently want to be gaffers or key grips.

What’s wrong with that the majority of straight men don’t want to be child health care workers, kindergarten teachers. ⁓ It’s just not something they’re wired to do.

Men aren’t as good at those jobs as women are doesn’t mean they can’t do them. It just means they don’t want to. So what does that say? Well, men and women are different, obviously, which is something that the partisan left, refuse to admit.

They want you to think that there’s really no difference, that we’re all the same. And when it comes to natural rights, we are all the same. We’re all human beings born on this great earth, and we are all entitled to the same natural rights, which means you can’t create special rights for groups within that group because you don’t need them. They already exist. And one of them is you have a right to pursue whatever occupation interests you, no matter what somebody else thinks about how many men or women should be in it.

That’s it for today. We’ll talk to you tomorrow.
