MACDONALD: Cornyn’s Pitch to End Filibuster [Updated]

Just the other day I opined on the notion that the Republican Primary between Paxton and Cornyn was becoming a bargaining chip to get some stuff out of the US Senate. Since then, both Trump and Paxton have come out saying that Republicans have to ditch the filibuster and pass the SAVE ACT.

No pauses, no exceptions, get it done.

Cornyn’s primary challenger Ken Paxton says he will not leave the race, even if Trump does bend to John Thune and endorse the cuck John Cornyn.

However, he has offered a deal: He will leave the race and let Cornyn accept his last coronation if and only if the SAVE Act is passed before the primary runoff.

Cornyn, for his mea culpa, penned an article in the NY Post, in which he itemizes every inch of the Democrats’ club crap sandwich on the filibuster.

Today, Democrats are weaponizing the Senate’s rules to block the SAVE America Act, defund the Department of Homeland Security and hurt the American people — all to spite President Donald Trump.

But they say openly that if these same rules ever get in Democrats’ way, they won’t hesitate to rip them up.

A rule is only a rule if both sides follow it.

I believe that Democrats, with their votes and statements, have already dealt the filibuster a fatal blow: The Senate rules will change eventually, whether Republicans like it or not.

This leaves conservatives with two options.

We can either unilaterally disarm, or we can stand and fight.

Democrats tried to nuke the filibuster and will do so again to advance all their priorities, given the chance. No one paying any attention is surprised by that.

Republicans have been playing by the gentleman’s rules, in part because they are a pack of weevils with a few exceptions, but rarely enough of them. The result is a year of majority without getting nearly much done. The OBBBA was nice, but the mantle is collecting dust, waiting for more to join it. And Cornyn’s white flag of surrender, or maybe truce, is his call to do what Trump wants, what America wants, and what he needs if he’s to survive the primary.

Apply whatever leverage is needed to end the filibuster, which is a made-up thing anyway, and then get some shit done. Pass the SAVE ACT so the lawsuits to block it can start in time for it to maybe be in force before November. Pass the DHS budget, and then get the rest of the Trump Agenda over the finish line so we can Make America Great Again.

I know. It’s contrary to the minds, interests, and will of US Senators for America to be great in ways they don’t control or can’t profit from. They need lobbyists to buy them dinner and drinks and move large sums from PACs to political coffers. Shrinking government staff, cutting budgets/programs forever, or giving the nod to ending unnecessary Executive branch departments, are not on their to-do list, ever.

It would be nice if they got some of that done while the filibuster is vacationing in the US Virgin Islands. Watching the DOW video of drug boats getting droned into tiny bits and fish getting high on fentanyl. The US Navy mopping up the last of Iran’s “navy,” gunning down jihadi swift boats, and sweeping mines out of the Strait of Hormuz.

Probably cheaper than digging a canal from just north of Ras Al Khaimah in Dubai across to the Gulf of Oman. And ending the Mullah-ruled Islamic Republic would certainly accomplish the same goal. Ease of travel without mined waters and psychos hopping to meet Allah, and some ridiculously large sum saved after the leading sponsor of global terror no longer has its own built-in funding mechanism (besides Democrats)

There will be those who still fund terrorists, but not at this scale. And after Trump’s military did that thing in Venezuela, more than a few “world leaders” are probably rethinking some hobbies.

Longshanks (Braveheart): If he can take York, he could invade lower England. It could be my head… in a basket.

The Republican majority US Senate could make more than just America Great Again, and how does that look on the resume? probably not. These idiots are naval gazers but Cornyn, to his credit, is trying to pretend he wants to end the filibuster ‘cuz dems will.

We can let the Democrats keep obstructing today and then smash the rules the first chance they get, or we can act now and use the mandate the American people gave this president and this Congress to secure our elections, protect our homeland and bring back common sense.

The answer is clear: We need to stand, fight and win.

Democrats started this fight. Now Republicans should finish it.

I’m not sure whose balls he’s borrowing, but they just need to be big enough for long enough that he can share them with the caucus.

Not holding my breath.

Pre-Publication Cornyn Update: Not hours after the NYP Op-Ed was posted, Cornyn was dodging questions about it.

Cornyn told an NBC News reporter to “go away” when asked about his new filibuster position, disputing his own op-ed’s claim that he would do “whatever changes may prove necessary.”

“I said I’d be open to reforms,” Cornyn shot back to a question about “nuking the filibuster,” answering further attempts to clarify his position with “I think we’re through. Go away.”

Trump doesn’t play these games, homey, so be careful about your POST op-ed remorse. He might get his SAVE ACT and endorse Paxton.
