TWITTER IS SHUTTING DOWN TWEETDECK FOR WINDOWS: Funny, when I joined Twitter in December of 2008, Tweetdeck was Twitter for me. Built around multiple columns, with one for people in my Twitter Stream, another people responding to me, and another direct messages, Tweetdeck allowed me to have real time conversations, instead of trying to decipher the firehose of content coming out of my Twitter homepage. (That was back when I wanted to be interactive. After watching endless Twitter flamewars, I’m much happier to simply retweet interesting news and comments, and save my content creation for here and the main PJM site.)
Why? Benjamins:
“Twitter’s plan is to push all users to Twitter.com for their advertisement revenue,” as their stock price has cratered in recent months. That that tends to happen when companies exit their original function to go full-on SJW instead. This despite the fact that “Tweetdeck is insanely popular among Twitter desktop users. They had previously bought the client.”
Look, Twitter is a private company and they can do what they want – and with their Safety Council (with a makeup of Leftist SJWs) demonstrably shutting down any thought contrary to theirs (and seemingly in no small measure, taking retribution against those that have dared to stand up against them (e.g, Stacey McCain)). If they want to make life tougher now for usability, well, their choice.
I’m not a big tweeter – I generally reserve it for political events on TV like debates. But Tweetdeck does allow me to set up, as Ed points out, multiple columns for different types of messages. While tweeting, I like to watch who is saying what and that compartmentalization helps slow down some of the stack for retweeting / requoting rather than just me putting stuff out. I can’t believe that I’d want to try to make order of a “single column” Twitter home page of GraniteGrok – why make life harder on myself? Again, I do it to please me and if I have to work hard at something that is supposed to be a guilty pleasure, well, I’ll just keep my content all here and just use our WP Twitter plugin to continue to announce stuff here rather than do original content on Twitter.
Like a said in my previous post comparing R Party to the minicomputer industry – listening to your customers is key. They drift away and you got bumpkis. Will Twitter catch a short term lift to their long term detriment? I certainly don’t know but as an occasional user, if you make it harder for me to use, well, I’ll just blog instead of tweet. I’ll switch to another tool when there is value add – forcing me to a lesser model for the sake of your inability to monitize tells me “I’m not valued”. So, I’ll pull a Groucho.
And you’ll have one less customer.
