Santayana: Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
For those of us in the Boomer generation, the Cold War is still not all that long ago (or so it seems). Yet, this clown can’t quite remember his history:
An Arizona mayor is comparing a Border Patrol proposal to put razor wire on portions of the U.S.-Mexico border fence to building the Berlin Wall.
“We’ve had a black eye because everybody is using the border as a political issue,” Nogales Mayor Arturo Garino said in a phone interview.
Yes, defending our border IS a political issue – the highest calling for our Federal Government in keeping our citizens from harm from other countries. The purpose of our border fence is to keep others outside of the country that do not have permission to come in.
The Berlin Wall, too, was also a political issue at the time when the East Germans put it up – its purpose was to keep its citizens in and not let them out of the country. If one of their citizens tried to break out of their country, the East German soldiers had orders of “shoot to kill”.
No, Mayor Garino, the two are not the same.
