DOCTORS FEAR HUGE SPIKE IN STIs AFTER PANDEMIC
ARE WE IN FOR A RUDE AWAKENING?According to a new study, cases of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including chlamydia and gonorrhea could soon spike as the COVID-19 pandemic winds down. As we’re heading what the media has referred to as “hot vax summer,” experts are worried that STIs could return with a vengeance.
…“At a high level, the study finds that STI testing dramatically declined and never fully returned to pre-pandemic levels – between late February and late July 2020, likely resulting in higher positivity rates and a strong likelihood of missed cases, particularly in asymptomatic but potentially infectious individuals,” Harvey Kaufman, senior medical director and lead author of the study, which was published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine last month, told Contemporary OB/GYN.
It’s still not exactly clear what is causing these trends. Experts argue that lower STI testing could be caused by a number of things, including changes in sexual behavior during lockdowns or a change in testing protocols as a result of COVID.
STIs were in sharp decline last year in other parts of the world. Norway found cases dropped sharply, according to official statistics. HIV cases also dropped by 20 percent.
Now that confirmed cases of COVID in the US are at their lowest point since the beginning of the pandemic, though, experts are worried STIs could make a dangerous resurgence. With restrictions being lifted, the world could move “towards a summer of sex,” as the BBC reported last week.
In fact, psychologists are arguing shared trauma could actually lead to more risky sexual behavior. Whether that will lead to spikes in STIs, though, remains to be seen.
This is a question that has to even be asked? “Not exactly clear what is causing these trends“? You tell the world to stay home by themselves. You tell them to keep their distance from others. You tell them to keep masks on, indoors and out.
Then you tell them “hey, we’re all done”. And they have no clue what’s going to happen?
I’ll admit – compared to most people, I’m a prude. Just celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary – ALWAYS faithful to TMEW. And as a Christian, I believe in one man / one wife and that commitment is for life (marriage is not about lust or love or not just being lonely – it IS about a single-minded commitment because of the promise of “’til death do you part” and that promise was made not only to TMEW but to God as well. So for me, not a problem. At all. Ever.
But a lot of people reject that notion completely – “Hook-Up” culture is all about self-gratification as well as immediate gratification without commitment. Commitment is a drag – it means putting someone ahead of yourself and that is just so not right anymore.
So, with all of the “guidelines” now gone, there are no restrictions on anyone eyeballing (+ more) anymore, what moron doesn’t think that “hot and steamy” isn’t going to go into second overdrive? After a year and a half of abstinence for people who had no previous notion (or desire) to be in that state of being?
And they really have to say “we think STI rates are going to go up?”.
