Daughter of William Baer Speaks After her Father Is Arrested at Gilford, NH School Board Meeting

by Steve MacDonald

Marina Baer is the daughter of Dr. William Baer.  William Baer was arrested and removed from the Gilford, NH school board meeting for violating a 2 minute speaking rule.  Dr. Baer refused to yield the floor until he was finished so the school board had him arrested and removed by the duty officer.  His daughter, Marina, the 9th grader who revealed the sexually explicit material she found in a book she was assigned to read at a Gilford Public School, stepped up to speak after her father was removed.

(Note: William Baer will be our guest this Saturday morning (5-10-14) on GrokTALK!  You can watch him get arrested here.)

Per request here is a link to an image of one page scanned from the book, whose sexually excplict content parents find objectionable

Thanks to Josh Youssef for the video and Susann Olsen for the link to that video.

Even though it fell on deaf ears, that what I call a perfect delivery.
Did you see how the chair had to interrupt the daughter even though she identified herself by name. Even if she had provided her address at the beginning she still would have been interrupted by the chair on some other technical issue just to disrupt the speakers train of thought. This is only one of the several techniques that are taught at NEA seminars for dealing with parents in these type of situations.

Porno in 9th grade along with violence? Parent broke a bureaucratic 2 minute rule to express his displeasure for the continued porno being allowed. When are parents[pta] going to realize their town officials work for them and at their pleasure? Lawsuits are good and all, But, where are the arrest and convictions and firing of school and town officials for allowing this disgusting abuse of society. They use to use barrels of tar and bags of feather for perverts and minor criminals, but I like the arm and head lock down in the town square, were it should be displayed always.

  • Bryan W

It isn’t just “Porno”: If this section of this book was put into pictorial or movie form, the creators and anyone who possessed it would be arrested for child porn facing lengthy prison time. The section cannot even be read on the radio without significant editing in order to abide by FCC “decency” rules. Given those two tidbits, how can any teacher, administrator, School Board member, or parent agree that this is appropriate for 14-15 year olds, let alone in government schools at all? If the tables were reversed and we had done this, the left would smear us with terms like “Child Porn Perverts” or “War on [take your pick – women, teenage girls, etc].” I don’t know if tactically this would be the right thing to do to them.. but we should be hanging this on every government school type and make them distance themselves from it.

    • Radical Moderate

“Given those two tidbits, how can any teacher, administrator, School Board member, or parent agree that this is appropriate for 14-15 year olds, let alone in government schools at all?”

      – Because this book was on an approved reading list for that grade level. That’s what the school administrators are going to fall back on when they are pinned to the wall or they are sued. This is how they avoid liability Bryan, that’s why they don’t care. What the parents have to do is push for a town regulation that mandates that the current approved reading list becomes null and void and the parents pull a reading list from 1950’s and have the schools draw from that new approved reading list. If the school administrators object or scream that its not in accordance with US Department of Education guidelines just point them to the door and give them directions to the unemployment office. There are plenty of teachers and administrators out there looking for work.
Local control has been stolen by the Progressives and they will not give up their control of our nations children without a knock down drag’em out, bare knuckles philosophical fight. It means far to much to them.
Remember one of the main tenets of communism voiced by Lenin; “Give me just one generation of youth, and I’ll transform the whole world.”

      • Bryan W

I agree with what you are saying, but WHO put this on the approved reading list – those names need to be rooted out and exposed for all to see. They need to be questioned in public, about the specifics of why they approved this book containing this glaring passage, clearly inappropriate for that age level (and I would argue, for any school use).

        • Radical Moderate

There is the required reading list and the ‘suggested’ reading list. I don’t know which one this book was on. But I bet some EAGER REPORTER LOOKING TO GET SOME STREET CRED on a NATIONAL STORY could find it out who selected that particular book or even if there was some sweetheart deal made because its a New Hampshire author.
I know if I was a major media outlet looking to hire that would look great on a resume.

The two minute rule was just there to limit speech of those in opposition. An article I read stated that it was the first time they had used the two minute rule. After stating your name, address, social security number, and stating all the information contained in your genetic genome, you only have about 10 seconds left. How convenient.

And these people needed to stand up for this man. I would have stood up, stated my name and address, and handed over my two minutes to this man. Maybe others would have followed suit.

    • GHS_Student

I need to go over a few things with you real quick. First off, the two minute speaking limit was not to shut up opposing views, considering there were many people there who wanted to side with the book and against it. Second the rule was used in the first place because of the large quantity of people that showed up. (We’re a relatively small town and are not used to 20 citizens showing up to each take a turn to speak and if everyone got to rant on and on no one would’ve ever gotten to go home). Third, all you needed to do was say your name and address (which most people didn’t give anything more than a name) so stop saying all the other crap was needed cause that’s how rumors start and these things get blown out of proportion. Lastly, no one stood up for him cause he was interrupting their time to speak. Let me give you an example; if we were both at that meeting and every time you went to speak I stood up and went “now wait just a minute!” And talked over you even though my turn to speak was already over, wouldn’t you be alittle upset? And Mr. Baer was doing this constantly so he was escorted out of the building.

      • DisgruntledAmerican

“We’re a relatively small town and are not used to 20 citizens showing up to each take a turn to speak and if everyone got to rant on and on no one would’ve ever gotten to go home”

So use more than one day to discuss it. Happens all the time. I’ve been in week long business meetings for less. They should have known that two minutes was hardly enough to discuss this matter.

“Let me give you an example; if we were both at that meeting and every time you went to speak I stood up and went “now wait just a minute!” And talked over you even though my turn to speak was already over, wouldn’t you be alittle upset? And Mr. Baer was doing this constantly so he was escorted out of the building.”

If I would have been at your meeting, I would have stood up, stated my name and address, and gave him my two minutes. I wouldn’t be able to complete what I’d have to say in two minutes, so might as well give him the chance.
Stand up for your rights. Otherwise they will be trampled on. To hell with a two minute rule.

Due to your name, I assume you are a student – I am not and have dealt with these same “adults” for years (yes, I have lived in Gilford for nigh on 30 years). The 2 minute was a tactic, not a result of the qty of people there.
And so was the deliberate tactic of not responding to citizen concerns (“we will not read anything or answer any questions”) – simply the Board’s decision to not allow citizens to seek redress of those they have elected. This was a deliberate act to stonewall in hopes to not have to say anything unscripted and hoping to GOD that this will just blow over. Tell me, Student, if the Board won’t answer questions, how can that be good civic governance? How is does that promote open and transparent procedures, on which good governance depends? Most people understand why Mr. Baer got very upset – he had concerns and questions and NOT ONE PERSON ON THAT BOARD had the courage AND decency to give him the answers he sought.
That is totalitarian (when elected leaders act in ways that demonstrate they believe they are no longer accountable – and this Board has done it for years).
“Not used to 20 citizens showing up” – you are flat out wrong, having both been in the audience and on a Board (Vice-Chair, BudComm). Sure, sometimes there isn’t anyone “from the Public” in attendance and sometimes it can be standing room only. Don’t try to impugne otherwise.
Going home? GOOD Chairs would allow the meeting to go on as long as needed for all to have their say – both Allen and Webber have shown themselves to be otherwise.
        You have much to learn.

        • Guest

It is their DUTY to answer questions. The board exists solely to provide COMMUNITY governance of a school. They are responsible to the community and a question should NEVER go unanswered.

This board is concerned about THEMSELVES. They are apologizing for not sending out waivers, but not the fact they have passed out what I would consider textual pornography. As Baer said, if I passed this out to 9th graders, I would be arrested. If I photocopied page 313 and was found handing it to someone at work, I would be FIRED for sexual harassment. At the very least, this board should be held responsible for corrupting minors.

So I’m assuming that you are one of our old, wack job conspiracy theorists who really believe that the world and everyone in it is out to get them. Or is president Obama specifically out to get you too? The two minutes was not a tactic. Our teacher made a mistake and the notice went out a week late. IT WAS NOT INTENTIONAL. And Baer didn’t want to discuss it with anyone but the media. He tried to contact Mr. Sawyer ONCE on Friday but it went to voicemail because sawyer was at our prom. Sawyer called Baer back but it went to voicemail and Sawyer told him that he could call back any time over the weekend or meet with him Monday. Baer never responded, which proves all he wanted was this attention and all this shit to happen in our town.

          • granitegrok

“you are one of our old, wack job conspiracy theorists ”

Glad to see you have validated my point against Lynne Horton (http://granitegrok.com/blog/2014/05/email-doodlings-depending-public-school-grads-maintain-civil-benevolent-society) that we cannot depend on public school grads as being civil. And nice to see that you jump to conclusions, too.
And I am so glad you are calling me a liar, even though I have experienced this tactic before when it was clear that the GSB just didn’t want to address a topic that was reflecting badly on them and their policies.
The root problem is not the behavior of the GSB (which has become a big problem they have brought upon themselves) or the lack of notification but that the book has material that is very objectionable to parents was inserted into the approved list in the first place. It continues to show a disdain towards the parents that pay their salaries.

So that was his daughter on the video – part of his “entourage.” And I assume that was his son shooting the video and asking those inane questions of the arresting officer? “Nineteen Minutes” may be a so-so book that is not appropriate for the age group it was targeted for at GHS and GHS is definitely to blame for dropping the ball on this one vis a vis notification to parents. But this guy was a major league A-hole and the fact that he’s using his kids to gain his 15 minutes of fame is repulsive. He’s obviously an anti-education, tea-party/free-state/libertarian type with an axe to grind.

    • Radical Moderate

Wow, all that from just watching the video, I’m impressed. Hey bal can you take a look at the Zapruder film and give me the scoop on what actually happened? Also if you could give me this weekends lotto number I would really appreciate it? Thanks in advance.

          balencesto – you need glasses.

          • Guest

Balencesto exemplifies why it’s kinda insane to keep your kids in today’s public schools. Today’s teachers and administrators are much too stupid to be able to teach children anything. Heck, these mindless automatons are even expelling preschoolers for inane sexual assault charges. They shouldn’t be anywhere near children. It’s come to the point that it’s Russian Roulette to have your kids in their classrooms. You’re far better off to find an affordable private school or knuckle down and homeschool your kids.

          • balencesto

Gee, lots o’ “facts” in that post, Mr. “guest” – it’s no wonder why you choose to remain anonymous. Heck, why should schools expel students for sexual assault? Let’s just have ’em “buggering” each other in class. But god forbid they READ about buggerin’ – that’s how stupid and hypocritical the idiot anti-education crowd is. BTW, did you know that ALL homeschool mommies breastfeed their “young” ’til their 7-10 years old? And THAT is about as factual a statement as anything “mr. guest” posted.

    • Kathleen LaBonte

balencesto – I understand that you are a public school teacher in NH. Is that true? Your postings have now raised a red flag as to your lack of character, morals, sensibility, sensitivity, and credibility to teach… if you are a teacher. I pray that parents are gathering your posts to file a complaint with your school district. As an “adult” in the room, I am concerned as to your vitriol and bullying directed at this young lady and her father, i.e. “…inane questions, A-hole, repulsive.” You, sir, need to look in a mirror. How dare you criticize a 9th grader who was traumatized at watching her father leave the school board meeting in handcuffs??? How dare you interject verbal garbage to what you have not researched and cannot know??? As with all professional fields, there are also Codes of Ethics and Conduct for the teaching profession in case you forgot. Based on all your assumptions that you like to spew out, you are not standing up to teaching industry standards in any sense of the word, i.e., “….seek to improve the effectiveness of the profession through research. People like you get their jollies in saying outrageous things to get a reaction, and people like you should never be allowed to teach. SOS to the parents of the students under your tutelage!!!

    • Meg

It’s not about the book or whether or not it’s appropriate. It’s about a concerned parent being treated with respect by a Gestapo-style board member. I hope this arrogant idiot of a board member gets the boot in the next elections.

  • balencesto

913 Terrace Hill Road in Gilford. Hmmmmm . . . . looks like a beautiful piece of lakefront property . . . must cost a pretty penny to live there. Yet I bet, unlike Colin Van Ostern and Bill Duncan, you won’t pick on the Baer’s for being rich. Funny how that works.

    • Bryan W

Unlike the Left, we usually don’t bring in someone’s wealth unless it is germane to the discussion. What does where he lives and what kind of house he has have to do with the government school purveying ersatz child porn to 9th graders and passing it off as “literature?”

      • Radical Moderate

It appears since balencesco is cutting and pasting the same ‘supposed real story’ from an ‘unnamed insider’ in every forum concerning this issue and not engaging in debate about it, one can only conclude that he/she must have a direct benefit from defending the school board.

        • Bryan W

He could also be a Union lackey, or have some interest in this book.

          • JP

Isn’t part of this book about Bullying? and isn’t that exactly what they did?

          • balencesto

            HEY IDIOTS! LISTEN UP!!!!

            1) I don’t work for GHS!!!!! Nor does my wife. we have NO personal vested interest in GHS, its board or its union.

            2) My wife has read the book and didn’t like it. Says it’s not worth teaching – certainly to that age group. I’ve not read it and don’t plan to.

            3) I do know that the book is about a school shooting. And since sex is a natural part of all human existence and shootings (last time I checked) are a heinous aboration of violent, destructive behavior – I find it baffling that while the book has both things in it – no one’s worked up about the latter, only the former.

And before you go brand me a “gun grabber” or something like that – I own four guns and use them regularly.

      • Angela M

To me, this is about two things:
        1. William Baer’s rights were violated (and the implications for American culture are scary).

        2. “Purveying ersatz child porn”. That’s what the school is most definitely doing, and that is my professional opinion (2 Ph.D.’s and teaching experience from K through grad school in five different cultures).

    • Kathleen LaBonte

Sir, why are you stalking???? Why does it matter where Mr. Baer lives or how rich he is? That has nothing to do with the issue at hand which is condoning porn in a public school. Unbelievably, the superintendent admitted it is pornagraphic material when interviewed:

“I asked the superintendent if he would agree that the novel was a bit smutty. He declined to comment. “I’m not going to make a decision on pornographic material,” he said. Heaven forbid the superintendent of schools be the arbiter of decency. So who, pray tell, is responsible for deciding whether children are exposed to pornographic literature? “It’s a decision of the local community,” he told me.”

Before your post, I was concerned when parents were asked for their address before speaking. Your post validated my worry that people like you would stalk parents who want to get to the bottom of what is being fed to the minds of their children. They don’t have to give their address, and they shouldn’t. Why don’t you post the address of the school board members? I would prefer having those. We can’t even obtain on the SAU website an individual email for each member. Everything has to go through the “Big Brother” SAU, and I say BS to that. Parents have a right to a private dialog somehow somewhere with elected officials. If these people want privacy they should not have run for office.

We elect school boards to have common sense, and represent the interests of all parents and students. The Gilford/Gilmanton School Board members have failed, and now the national community knows what a failure they are. There is ZERO defense of this material, and Mr. Baer’s daughter said it best before she departed that meeting “….I honestly don’t feel safe around you people” and nobody should.

    • sadasdad

Wish I could have confirmed the address (it was hard to hear). I would love to mail them an old copy of “The Children’s Story.” They’d appreciate it. For those of you who are interested, you can see the two-part stage play online at YouTube. It’s very timely.

        • Radical Moderate

“Shekels” It figures, we have anti-Semites siding with those that are pushing porno on our kids. Stands to reason.

          • balencesto

  • balencesto

The REAL STORY . . . from a colleague of mine who teaches at GHS:

“So the story is that the
book was assigned back in 2007 when we had a suicide and the English
dept was asked to pull Romeo and Juliet that year. Then English is a
Trimester longer the past 2 years so they went back to teaching this
book and forgot to send home a permission slip (both teachers, although
one is new and the other is new to teaching freshman but is
retiring in June). Usually a few kids opt out and they can read another
book. The parent found the page and called principal to set up a meeting
and by then the parent went to the media with it and then to school
board meeting. By then ghs had sent home an apology about not notifying
parents and the issue was resolved by the school but this parent is
still enraged. Their is no discussion on pulling the book or whether
it’s garbage or good, if parents don’t want their kids to read it it’s
totally ok and can opt out. I’m not sure why this is getting so much
attention and why conversations about the content have started it’s
    so.dumb.”

As usual – an overreaction by the anti-education right.

    • Radical Moderate

Sorry bal, the point of the matter seems to have sped right by you while you were looking down around peoples feet. Its no longer about the book, its now a national issue and it has become the selection process for those books not reflecting the taxpayer base.
I wouldn’t want to be those school board members. Its too close to November election time for them not to be made an example of by a left or right politician….Yikes.

    • sue

Yea Bal you totally missed the point. We have a right to speak up and not get hand cuffed. You should be able to speak up on why you want the book to be read. Not an overreaction by the anti- education folks, it was a major overreaction by the board.

    • Smilinjack

If you want your kid reading garbage you are free to let him/her. By the same token I choose not to want my kids reading it. You lob me into an “anti education right” group. Where did you get that information about me? While I THINK you are a part of the libtUrd left, that is only my opinion. I too do not have any proof of that. The only difference between you and me is I admit it. You, on the other hand are a sanctimonious know nothing, know it all.

      • balencesto

I refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed man.

        • Smilinjack

I have as much arnament on here as you do. Your little quip is merely an easy out of a debate you cannot win.Your problem is that you cant break my argument. If I had to guess I would guess you are a teacher or, someone attached to that profession. You walk with blinders on so you cant see anything other than your plan, With your “verbal” blinders in place as well, you are of a mind that you, of all people, cannot be wrong. That is E X A C T L Y what is wrong with the overall “agenda” of the radical left (NEA, AFT) when it comes to educating the young. As in this case what is the educational value of kids reading about “Semen hot and sticky pooling ” underneath a young gills’ body? That is just not appropriate for the age group. And if you think it is there is more wrong with you than can be addressed here!

          • IWKAGGP

And if you had an ounce of reading comprehension or the patience to actually read all of my posts on this topic, you’d know that I too think this book is not appropriate for that age group. But either you don’t or you are impaired by your own “blood red” colored rightie/tea-party/free-state/libertarian blinders.

          • Smilinjack

My argument wasn’t with you. Do you feel it necessary to inject yourself into the discussion merely to add your assumption as to what associations I may or, may not be associated with or is there something else on your mind, I salute you for your position on the subject, I have no reason or, desire to name call even though I have a full quiver of arrows.

          • balencesto

” . . . merely to add your assumption as to what associations I may or, may not be associated with. . . ” Gee, Smilin’ Jack – I didn’t know that one could be “associated with an association.” Did you mean to say “what associations I may or not be making?” And you’ve got comma issues as well . . . see, can’t resist a “teachable moment.”

………….What you said, read it back to yourself a few times. Educate yourself. Oh, and I have your comma………… you know where!! 🙂

What have we come to? Getting arrested for disagreeing with others and for standing up for higher moral values than what the majority seems to go along with. This man demonstrates class and guts and yet gets removed for speaking his moral convictions, and then they call this a crime?! This is absurd and certainly does not emulate the freedoms our forefathers shed their blood and tears for. And it is appalling that he was not even supported by another like-minded, caring individual in the room? Has everyone just lost their way? I support you and your daughter whole-heartedly Mr Baer! I hope and pray that you both find peace and justice in this disgusting matter.

I was at a Townhall meeting in Deerfield IL that was a forum for a Senator advocating for stricter restrictions on the Second Amendment.

The policy was different at this Townhall meeting. Comments were not allowed, only questions.

The opponents of concealed carry on the Dias were permitted to make comments that were disputed by a majority of those in the audience with no way for those in the audience to counter, unless they countered, in the firm of a question, what they believed to be an untruth on the part of those on the Dias (something pretty difficult to do unless you are prepared for the perceived untruth and if you’re aware you are only going to be allowed to comment or question beforehand).

Evidently, the goal of those in control at these types of meetings is to stifle debate and keep opposing views from being discussed so others are not influenced or educated.

What is needed is for citizens to remind these people that they are accountable to us and we are in control.

Some people say that if there are not some rules of order chaos ensues.

For the most part most people in a public meeting of 30, 40, 80 people can speak their mind with plenty of time to go around. Usually it’s a handful of people with the inclination to speak-up, as it is.

At the Townhall meeting I was at I was ejected for insisting to comment to counter what I believed was an untruth by the Senator.

I did not stay seated when the Officer came over and told me to leave. I got up and was escorted out. I was not arrested.

Mr. Baer should not have been arrested. He should, at the most, have been escorted out.

This would not have happened in my parents America (I’m 55).

These elites are creating an environment where we’re going to need a Citizen Townhall Bill of Rights.

1 – Recordings and video allowed.

2- Every person that wishes to gets to ask a question or make a comment is allotted a total of 5min and will then have the opportunity to ask one more question or make one more comment in the same allotted time after all others who wish to do so have asked a question or made a comment.

Elected officials will make it their business to be available for 10 hrs. of question time. Yes a FULL day.

Anyone creating a disturbance will be asked to leave and if they refuse they will be removed.

There needs to be rules of order, but it is evident these elected elites are gerrymandering things so that the voice of the public is stifled.

It’s our job to see to it that that comes to a stop.

Another interesting thing I heard at the Townhall I was booted from was that before the meeting started, one citizen confronted one of the Town council persons about a “No Video or Audio” recording sign on the table outside the room the Townhall meting was being held. As I heard the story go, a citizen asked, “Is that the law or is that a request, pointing to the sign?”
The town council person hesitated and replied, “It’s a request.”

That’s scary, as most law-abiding people would assume such a sign was the law. That’s what I assumed when I saw the sign. Thank god they were questioned on it by a citizen.

This girl is completely correct. She is not safe amongst those people. They have no capacity to think and should really not be allowed around the developing minds of any children. I hope this girl decides to educate herself at home or in a private school — and that the school and school board lose all kinds of tax dollars as a result of reduced enrollment.

Take that you liberal boomer jerks!

I truly admire Marina Baer. The school board members are “little Caesars.” While I would not object to my teens reading the book, the father had every right to voice his complaint and he was correct that the district broke policy by not informing parents (the board later apologized about this point.) I saw the video. Mr. Baer was not really disruptive — just a bit emotional. Anyone with any leadership ability could have handled the situation more appropriately. The board member could have said, “Thank you, Sir. We understand. Could we move on now?” Instead the board member acted like a little Gestapo chief. I hope she gets voted out next election!

Tyrants try to rule by intimidation. That’s what POLITICAL CORRECTNESS is. When you hear some miscreant in Washington say that “You might be a terrorists if….”, the implication is that something bad might happen to you.

The best way to deal with this is to publicly expose these thugs. They are cowards. They think that we are afraid of them. They think that they are our “leaders”, when in fact they work for us.

Besides public exposure, victims should be encouraged to sue.

Hmm, i wonder why the school board was not arrested fro disseminating
pornographic materials to minors. Seems a greater offense than speaking
    over the 2 minute mark.
