Seuss-gate, if you’re not aware, involves the snubbing by a School Librarian in the People’s Republic of Cambridge to a gift of books by Melania Trump. Dr. Seuss, you see, is racist propaganda.

“You may not be aware of this,“ she continued, ”but Dr. Seuss is a bit of a cliché, a tired and worn ambassador for children’s literature. As first lady of the United States, you have an incredible platform with world-class resources at your fingertips.”

She goes further. “Another fact that many people are unaware of is that Dr. Seuss’s illustrations are steeped in racist propaganda, caricatures, and harmful stereotypes,” she claims.

In any auction, the winning bidder may pay more for something than it is worth. That is especially the case in this kind of auction — in which government entities compete with one another in offering tax breaks to a rent-seeking corporation (i.e., one looking for public assistance for private gain) that is trying to get as much as it possibly can from government.

The fatal flaw here is the deeply ingrained habit of regional economic development agencies and other government entities of assuming (falsely) that a public investment of X dollars will yield about 2X in indirect benefits — in addition to the job creation and economic growth that come from the investment made by the rent-seeking company.

Take Ed Naile, for instance. Renowned as The Straightest Man with a Chainsaw, his job is to flush cut the competition logs between heats. STIHL measured a set of 100 cuts of his — nearly all were perfectly level, and the worst was off by just half a degree. And Ed eyeballs it every cut.

We filmed this Series Final in Milwaukie, Wisconsin at a German heritage festival. It was great. All 12,000 seats were full and then some.
