To any Republican who finds themselves caught up in a scandal over which Democrats are demanding they resign, say Jay Jones. Jones not only talked about killing a Republican, his wife, and their two children. When asked to recant, he doubled down. His own party is as incapable of denouncing his threats of political violence, in which there are no gray areas left to interpretation, as that directed at Charlie Kirk.
The internet is bursting with videos of Democrats in office or aspiring to it who, when asked about political violence, say nothing. They walk away in silence, affirming that they either don’t care or that they do and approve of it.
Absent any instruction from Party leadership on how to address that, they do the only thing they can. Remain mum, which is rarely the case when an opportunity for outrage arises regarding republicans.
You will, by now, have heard about the Young Republicans chat in which some derogatory and off-color things were said. Next door in Vermont, State Sen. Samual Douglass has found himself washed out to shore with the tide, except that it was a Republican first out of the gate telling him to resign.
COLCHESTER, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) – Vermont politicians called on Vermont Sen. Samuel Douglass (R-Troy) to resign after a Politico article claimed that he had participated in a national Young Republican group chat, including making racist and prejudiced comments.
Governor Phil Scott, who is a Republican, released a statement calling for Douglass’s resignation as senator and a member of the party.
Phil Scott may be a super nice guy and the best Vermont can hope for as a Governor, but what the fuck, Phil? I can’t find any evidence that you took either the media or even one Dem to the woodshed over their silence on the Jay Jones thing.
If the press asked me about it, I’d be waiting for them to ask a Democrat about Jay Jones. Let me know when you’ve got that covered and get back to me. Resignation. Not a “you should apologize or take it back,” but resign?
Wow.
Calls for Douglass to resign also came from Vermont Young Democrats, who said that his comments had included “derogatory stereotypes about Indigenous women and antisemitic remarks about his Jewish colleagues,” and the Vermont Public Interest Research Group (VPIRG), which said that Douglass “owes more than an explanation.”
In a joint statement, Vermont’s Republican legislators said they agreed with Scott’s remarks, calling Douglass’s statements “inconsistent with Vermont values and what Vermont Republicans stand for.”
Does anyone in the Green Energy Mountain State have time to fisk the internet for statements from Vermont’s Young Dems about the Jay Jones family assassination remarks? And why are ‘Vermont Republican Legislators,’ saying anything but “when can we expect Vermont’s Young Democrats, or any Democrats to denounce Jay Jones and call for him to step down from the race in Virginia?”
Jay is reported to have apologized, and it’s full steam ahead on his campaign to be Virginia’s Attorney General. Top cop doubles down on killing Republicans, and his family, including his wife and young children, is not a problem for Democrats, but some off-color remarks and Samuel’s party is coming for his scalp.
This is why Vermonters can’t have nice things. Your republicans are too busy behaving the way Democrats have trained them. Not all of them, but we need to remind them about the battle space. You can’t let them get away with not living up to their own so-called demands of others. Call them out. Redirect to their scandals – they’ve got plenty.
And it is wholly inappropriate to traffic in racist, bigoted, or violent rhetoric, even when you think you are in private. Still, Democrats have a monopoly on all three, without apology or at least a sincere one. Stop being cowards. Stop doing their work for them.
A little “I should have said something then,” is perhaps in order, but I don’t hear any of you (Democrats or the media) saying Jay Jones (today’s example) needs to step down, resign, or banish himself from public service.
And then there’s the biggest sin of all. Pretending that this sort of behavior (from Republicans) will endear you to Democrats or the media. To make you like you might be one of them, but you can’t be much like spending, there can never be enough. If you are not all in all time, you are the enemy.
To close, Alinsky sold Dems on the idea that they need to hold their opponents to their book of rules. Trump and the MAGA movement adopted that strategy, and it wins arguments, elections, and narratives in the battlespace.
Or, you could keep losing, but then you’re not upholding your oath to protect and defend the people who voted for you from domestic threats, doing business as the Democratic Party.
Make them and their media defend their actions instead of taking Republicans to the woodshed for them. And when they do it, make a case for their hypocrisy. Republicans aren’t perfect, and they need to be called out on policy and principle just like Dems, especially when they are screwing Republicans over, but telling Douglass he should resign is a leap down the wrong hole.
You guys can’t afford to lose any Republican legislators, and if we were a Dem, they’d turn it around and blame you for it.
