Smith: Free Speech Much, Alderman Dowd?

Great theologians and secular philosophers alike have advised us to “practice gratitude.”  I think it’s a great idea and I know I should do more of that myself.  One sign post reminder of that appeared in my inbox as a group email from a Ward 3 watchdog.  What is high on my “gratitude list” today?  The answer is my recent escape from an embattled city that’s a disgrace to Live Free or Die values.  And to be more specific within that answer, NOT being a constituent of Alderman Dowd is a big part of that.

I’ve written several articles on Alderman Dowd as his most recent opponent and they can be found here.  There are also articles from the L-Team in that anthology.  After his most recent reelection, the revelation that, as the committee chair, he lost track of $4.5M in ESSER funds can be seen in this video montage.  It has already been made clear over the years that Alderman Dowd is an enemy of your freedoms, particularly your freedom to breathe fresh air and your freedom to keep your money.  He’s already known for going after your wallet, but now he’s got your free speech as the next thing he wants to take from you.

The Board of Aldermen meet tonight(Tuesday July 8) and Item #18 on the agenda is Resolution O-25-060, Prohibiting banners, flags and signs at meeting.  The lone sponsor is none other than Alderman Dowd.  Nashua already has (unapproved)FLAGS banned from their community flag pole, why not the chamber also?  He and his supporters will likely argue that such visual messaging items are not allowed in the state house galleries for either chamber or committee meeting/hearing rooms.  To that, I will say that city hall is NOT the state house.

When Alderman Dowd told the rest of his peers to reject a resolution to make library trustees elected rather than appointed, he said that Nashua is a city and too many people are trying to make it like a town.  If he wants to make city hall more like the state house, there are many suggestions that could be made to cultivate a more friendly, transparent and customer service oriented atmosphere, but we all know that’s not what he wants.  He wants to silence critics of the local ruling class just like many other tyrants in many other levels of government today and in history.

If you’re so inclined to push back against this bill, take to the mic tonight, email Alderman Dowd and/or your alderman.  Put that whole body on notice and remind them of election time coming up soon.  And most of all, help recruit a viable opponent that will play to win and support that candidate with every resource at your disposal.
