Alderman Crissy Kantor Calls on Manchester Police to Join Ice Program

…After Sheriff Partnership Announcement

“We have criminal illegal aliens in our city—and our police are being told to look the other way.”

MANCHESTER, NH — Following the announcement that Hillsborough County Sheriff Brian Newcomb has joined the federal 287(g) program, empowering his deputies to assist U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in detaining criminal illegal aliens, Manchester Alderman Crissy Kantor (R–Ward 6), mayoral candidate, is calling on the Manchester Police Department to do the same.

“We’re not asking local police to chase down immigration violations—we’re asking them to cooperate when they already arrest someone who shouldn’t be here to begin with.” Kantor said.

Kantor emphasized that deputization under ICE’s 287(g) agreement does not require Manchester Police to enforce federal immigration law proactively. Rather, it allows officers to hold criminal illegal aliens they’ve already arrested until ICE can take custody. Sheriff Newcomb clarified that his deputies are not seeking out illegal aliens but are empowered to hold them when encountered through standard law enforcement activity.

“Nowhere in New Hampshire is the need to protect the public from criminal activity greater than here in Manchester,” Kantor said. “We know our city has a significant illegal population. It’s time for the Manchester Police Department to join State Police, Hillsborough County, and other communities in stepping up to do what is right.”

Kantor also blasted Mayor Jay Ruais for his silence on the issue.

“Mayor Ruais claims Manchester isn’t a sanctuary city. If that’s true, why is he letting the police department look the other way? Why didn’t he condemn the school district when it sent letters to every family about how to avoid ICE detention and how the schools would block federal agents from campus? That’s textbook sanctuary city behavior—and he said nothing.”

Kantor pledged that as mayor, she would direct the Manchester Police Department to enter into a 287(g) agreement with ICE and make full cooperation with federal authorities a matter of city policy.

“The law is the law. If someone is here illegally and commits a crime, they don’t belong in our neighborhoods. They belong in federal custody—and I will make sure that happens under my administration. Time for bold, honest and transparent leadership to support our law enforcement and protect our communities!”
