AITKEN: Why So Shocked?

Now that many towns have held their March meetings, I am seeing posts from shocked taxpayers who wonder how anyone could have voted to take away their right to live in a single-family-zoned neighborhood.

Well, that is interesting because we in Bedford, along with 18 or so other towns, have been warning you about this for the past 3 years.

Those items on your ballot were merely your town letting you know they will comply with state laws, laws which allow developers to be ‘in business’ with the state, sometimes getting 9 years of tax-free status for ugly apartment buildings, thus shifting the burden to you, the owner of the single-family home.

Some misguided Republicans have continued to file bills that allow apartment buildings and ADUs on land that never should support them, under the guise of ‘property rights, ‘ while stealing the right of 70% of you to live in the neighborhood where you thought you’d have single-family status forever.

This push for ‘equality’ has roots in UN Sustainable Development Goals agenda, which posits that no person should be relegated to housing based on their economic status. Translation: the home you saved and worked for all your life, situated in a neighborhood of similar homes, should not be off limits to the ‘poor’.

We tried to warn you for the past 3 years. Enjoy your higher taxes and the robbing of your property rights.
