Think of the Dos Equis guy because I don’t always agree with Osborne, but when I do, it’s because he said something good. In a recent tweet, he said, “Anyone else wonder why all the attention on the SNAP corporate welfare program and not the federal workers who are furloughed or working without pay?”
I’ve been thinking about that myself, but didn’t act on that thought enough to bring it to the keyboard. Given the large amount of pork in the federal government workforce, I am not simple-minded enough to have the same opinion of all federal employees, and it’s my understanding that retro pay arrives upon the reopening of the government. My thoughts are with the people who have had to work all this time without pay. There are plenty of them to acknowledge, but Air Traffic Control comes to mind, since the FAA center is in Nashua.
Victoria Sullivan, a true public servant outside the senate chamber as much as when doing “the people’s work,” tweeted about a trip with her dog to the Shiloh Food Bank and shared information about the place. I’m recognizing her as the one who gave me the idea for this article. The Humane Society for Greater Nashua has a pet food pantry, as do other shelters.
While on the Comcast Employee Volunteer Corps, I participated in a landscaping outing at the Manchester Animal Shelter several years ago and learned about theirs. Ted Gatsas, the mayor at the time, stopped by alone and said hi without introducing himself during the event. I knew who he was, but many coworkers didn’t, and I later learned that he’s a big supporter. I know I’m rambling on a side trip here, but city elections are on Tuesday, and voters should be asking what Jay Ruais has done to help homeless ANIMALS in his city.
But back to the shelters, if you’re far from the Nashua-Manchester metropolitan area, your nearest shelter might have a pet food pantry. Whether or not they do, I’m sure they would welcome some support either way. Or you can donate funds to a shelter that does. Your generosity is sure to be welcomed, whether or not it’s food, money, volunteer time, or earmarked for distribution to pet owners who have fallen on hard times.
And back to the air traffic controllers, it’s certainly not just them. If you know someone who has been working without pay all this time and can’t afford to feed their pets, please direct them to the nearest pet food pantry.
