I ran into a tweet from Wyoming Senator John Barrasso congratulating Tim Scott for being the longest-serving Black Senator in American history. I join Barrasso in congratulating him, but my immediate question was if Ms Melanie Levesque would do so also.
In the past several election cycles, Melanie appeared to have enjoyed pointing out her “First Black” accomplishments as a political trailblazer here in NH. However, one must agree that such accolades are a more considerable accomplishment in higher office, especially federal office. Let’s briefly employ the Sherman and Peabody “Way Back Machine” and set the date to 1870.
In 1870, not only was there fresh post-Civil War bitterness and Jim Crow, but something else was also quite different in our federal government. US Senators were elected by their state legislatures rather than the ordinary way. An interesting side note is that our Secretary of State, an office sought by Melanie in 2022, is also elected that way. Anyway, 1870 was the year that the Mississippi legislature elected Hiram Revels to the US Senate. When I saw Barrasso’s tweet, I wanted to know how long Hiram Revels had been in office because of his 19th-century political trailblazing. Interestingly, Revels served less than a complete term due to appointments and other opportunities, so it wasn’t the 12 years/2 terms that I initially thought. Tim Scott took office 12 years ago.
The other thing I observed from the Barrasso tweet was a picture of Tim Scott wearing the famous yellow scarf, which is not the kind of scarf one would find in Dr Birx’s wardrobe closet. This yellow scarf represents support for school choice, something that’s ANATHEMA to Melanie, to use Senator Giuda’s favorite word. It reminded me of an old Davey and Goliath episode called “The Polka Dot Tie.” The IMDB storyline says “Davey and friends reject Nat because he wears a funny tie, but they soon realize God rejects no one.”
I named this article in the form of a question, will Melanie congratulate Tim Scott? My prognostication is no, especially because Tim Scott’s yellow scarf is Nat’s polka dot tie to her. However, the Davey and Goliath episode had a happy ending. Devout believers, like the series’ producers, would tell us to pray for Melanie. God hasn’t rejected her, and there is hope, albeit in the eye of the beholder, that she will someday be red-pilled.
