I’ve said it more than once. Democrats don’t care about health care because if they did, they wouldn’t have shut the government down “over it.” They would have voted for the clean continuing resolution to keep vets, seniors, and anyone on a government interference safety net, funded and covered.
Claims that this standoff is about preventing a health care crisis create one that is far more extensive in scope and more harrowing for more people.
In fact, despite all the microphone gobbling, health care seems unlikely to have anything to do with it.
COVID funding? It didn’t improve health outcomes; it made them worse while exacerbating waste, fraud, and abuse. And cutting off care for citizens to argue for Obamacare extensions so non-citizens can get care coverage, has to have some Democrats, wondering WTF? Who would pull the rug out from under Americans to fight for coverage for foreigners?
Democrats, and they’re all in.
And I’m not saying Democrats don’t want any or all of that, but some things typically happen during a shutdown that I think they want more.
Priorities
Cutting off pay to troops and enforcement agents engaged in immigration action strikes me as a higher order of importance. When the checks stop, they go home and sit and wait. Every ICE Office goes dark, and the criminal aliens are left to wander about un-deported.
Given all the adverse effects that might benefit the Democrat agenda during a shutdown, this seems most likely.
Why would they risk Trump gutting the swamp if not for some greater evil than unemploying thousands of Non-essential personnel who are also more likely Democrat voters? Even if their jobs go away and the Left’s lawyers can’t pry them back, warm bodies are still counted for the census, employed or otherwise.
- The shutdown affects far more health care than the small concessions they seek.
- The shutdown risks a significant number of government jobs, but they still don’t seem to be moved to prevent their loss.
- But keeping as many illegals as possible in the country, that’s a hill they are willing to die on, and they may.
Monkey Wrench
Trump has demonstrated a willingness to tap unallocated dollars to pay the troops and federal law enforcement to keep national defense fully functional and deployed.
And sooner or later, someone besides me – and maybe they already have – will connect the same dots.
You wrecked Americans’ health care to fight for insurance for non-citizens.
You risked the livelihoods of the families of Democratic voters in public service to the whims of the radical left. Their donations. Maybe their votes.
And, of course, the large-scale potential damage to anyone else affected by a long-term closure of the things the Feds should not be doing in the first place. That’s a lot of sacrificial lambs on the altar of whatever the Dems are after, which, if it’s what they say, they could have argued for in any one of twelve budget bills waiting to be addressed. Stalled for however long this shutdown circus is in town.
Republicans need to hold fast and get loud.
There is no winning argument on the left and only losing ones, but the media isn’t going to help unless you force its hand.
The Dems got nothing, and now they’ve got less. All you need to do is make the case to every camera and microphone you can find until five Democrat senators break ranks.
Don’t forget. The Clean CR already has bipartisan support.
