Breitbart reported that China is rising as the world’s STEM leader, while American schools place diversity first. This warning comes from three career academic math scholars :
Three career academic math scholars gave a stern warning about the “deplorable” state of K-12 math education in the United States as schools prioritize social justice and diversity over merit, thereby allowing China to successfully advance as the world’s leader in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Percy Deift of New York University, Svetlana Jitomirskaya of Georgia Institute of Technology and University of California Irvine, and Sergiu Klainerman of Princeton University – all academic math scholars who arrived in the United States as young immigrants – wrote at Quillette in August of their concern that the nation they are “proud” to call their home is quickly losing its “dominant position” in the mathematical sciences.
This is one of the primary reasons for exposing the school districts in New Hampshire that are failing their students with this new focus on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice. DEI-J, or Critical Race Theory, puts New Hampshire students at a disadvantage compared to their international peers.
Much of this decline started with the dumbed-down Common Core Math Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards. These national standards in STEM, lack the academic excellence that would allow our students to compete with their international peers. If you shift to a focus on DEI-J, they are warning parents that their children will not have opportunities to move into the STEM fields. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)
With all of the resources available to schools, there is no excuse for this kind of academic failure.
They go on to say:
“In our field, mathematics, we find that at most top departments in the United States, at least two-thirds of the faculty are foreign born,” they wrote. “Similar patterns may be observed in other STEM disciplines.”
Second, the national focus on social justice and diversity in K-12 schools, “however well-intentioned, has had the unfortunate effect of weakening the connection between merit and scholastic admission,” the authors asserted, noting such a priority “has served (sometimes indirectly) to discriminate against certain groups—mainly Asian Americans.”
How will this impact children who attend these public schools versus children educated at home or in a private school focused on academic achievement? It’s pretty clear who will have the doors of opportunity opened, and who will not.
Public school enrollment continues to drop while homeschooling increases. Parents are willing to invest their time in their children. School choice programs are also offering parents different options.
If school administrators continue to fail your children, you need to speak up and demand a return to an academic-focused school system. That will provide opportunities for all children, black, brown, and white. If you want social justice, then make sure your students are receiving the best quality education in our public schools.
School choice should be supported by all parents. You never know when your school administrators will set your students up for failure. It’s important to have these options available if they are ever needed. My hope is that school board members and administrators will abandon these fads.
My focus is always on pushing for academic excellence in our public schools so they can give all of our students the opportunities they deserve. It takes parents to run for the school board and continue to speak up in support of academic excellence in your public schools.
