You can find the history in a great many places, much it lifted from some of the same pages, but the gun-folks know the tale. The US Army needed a sidearm with more stopping power, or should I just say “stopping power”? The .38 they’d been using could not cut it, so the call went out, and Browning’s Colt .45 (the gun, not the lager) won Army approval in 1911.
The 1911 still gets the job done 110 years later as a star when it comes to stopping power.
