Houston Police Officers Union Says Hell No to County Executive’s Mandatory Mask order

The cops have their hands full. In places like Houston, Texas, where crime is still a rising problem, helping at testing centers and the sheer weight of dealing with the virus scare has them stretched thin. So, when a county executive intended to fine and jail people for not wearing masks in public, they had some words for her.

ICYMI: Shelter in Place is Not About Health it is About Politics and a More Permanent Form of Confinement

Harris County Executive Lina Hidalgo (the positions formal title is Judge, though she is not a Judge), announced yesterday that she was imposing

$1000 fines and up to 180 days in jail for anyone who will not wear a mask in public even though the infection numbers are flattening out according to Governor Abbot and his medical experts enough to relax some lockdown restrictions.

The Houston Police Officers Union learned about the order and issued a preemptive strike before she could even announce it.

Houston Police Officers are already stretched entirely too thin…Violent crime is up this year (murders up by 35%), property crime is up, (burglaries by nearly 30%), and HPD officers are staffing testing centers across the city. We do not have time to be pawns in Hidalgo’s game of attempting to control the actions of law abiding, tax paying individuals of our community. Especially since this idiotic order is possibly an unconstitutional one from the County Judge.

There’s more at the link, but the summary looks like this. The union recognizes that wearing masks in public is a good idea but officers will not be citing people or arresting them for going out in public without one.

Given that judge, Lina Hidalgo has already tried to release 4000 prisoners into the general population according to this same report (an actual judge blocked that effort) the contradiction should not be lost on anyone. I wrote about it a month ago, but liberals are still at it. Freeing convicted criminals while threatening to jail law-abiding citizens to refusing to bend the knee to their arbitrary acts of tyranny.

A crisis is a great litmus. If nothing else good comes of this at least we’ll have had a good look at who in elected office should not be permitted to wield any sort of power.
