Milford School Board – Another Embattled SAU

Milford School District - Another Embattled SAU

An embattled superintendent gets a ‘no confidence’ vote by the teacher’s union, the school board investigates itself, and resignations amass in Milford. ‘Milford Strong’ makes its appearance on T-shirts and bumper stickers, and no one seems to be happy about any of what’s happening, making the Milford School Board ANOTHER embattled SAU.

There is a lot here to dig through, and it will take some time. This will probably turn into a series of articles, but for now – the basics.

Jessica Huizenga was hired by the Milford School Board to be the Superintendent of Schools. In May this year, the teachers’ unions voted 99% for a ‘no confidence’ motion in Huizenga, which inspired a letter from the School Board backing the new superintendent. As of July, 43 resignations of staff had occurred. There are accusations aimed at the Board for not being open and transparent about the hiring process, as well.

During an investigation instigated by the School Board one member resigned. Jenni Siegrist, former Board member, was being investigated by Sheehan-Phinney for questions about ethics after text messages between her and former staffer were revealed. The investigation was cut short when Siegrist resigned, it appears.

Some parents have been upset with the Board and have been showing up to meetings wearing ‘Milford Strong’ T-Shirts. The slogan has also started to populate on cars via bumper stickers. Petitions are circulating on Facebook Groups, as well.

The Superintendent has started to address concerns raised by the public. One interview is here – via the Nashua Telegraph.

Board meetings have been tumultuous, reportedly now for months. There seems to be no end in sight to that.

Unions versus the Elected School Board seems to be the story. The children are nary mentioned. You know, the most important people in the School District.

The Grok will continue to look into this, and will update you when we know more.
