I’m going to give Democrat Senator Hirono the benefit of the doubt. For today’s exercise, at least initially, we will gift her (deserved or not) a presumption that she’s one of those people. The ones who are so smart that simple concepts are often difficult to grasp.
I’m not saying she deserves that gift; we’re just taking the high ground here. But after you watch this, you’ll have figured out the truth for yourself.
Sen. Hirono is trying to clarify what exactly the Department of Immigration Control and Enforcement means by the term ‘Illegal.’
The acting head of ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations, Nathalie Asher, responds,
“So, I’m not quite sure I follow the question, ma’am. …Individuals who are here unlawfully, or if they are out of status… are considered in an illegal status as it relates to …immigration law.”
Now that we’ve taken the high road let’s get realistic. How is it possible that a legislator, someone tasked with crafting the law, has no idea what illegal means?
Illegal means outside the law as written.
And this is a sitting US Senator?
