As the size and number of illegal alien caravans grow, Mr. Trump says he is prepared to shut down the border with Mexico unless Mexican authorities immediately halt all illegal immigration.
“It could mean all trade” with Mexico, Trump said when questioned by reporters in Florida. “We will close it for a long time.”
This is classic Trump, and I have to wonder if Mexico has figured that out. Closing the border means no trade, no parts, no transit of goods, materials, or people.
A substantial closure could have an especially heavy impact on cross-border communities from San Diego to South Texas, as well as supermarkets that sell Mexican produce, factories that rely on imported parts, and other businesses across the U.S.
I think the US has a better chance of surviving that than Mexico. Not that it will likely come to that.
No Money for You
Mr. Trump has also announced that his promise to end all Federal funding to the countries where these armies of illegal immigrants are originating.
In a stunning about-face, State Department officials said that President Donald Trump is cutting off all direct assistance to the so-called Northern Triangle countries of El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala.
“At the Secretary’s instruction, we are carrying out the President’s direction and ending FY [fiscal year] 2017 and FY 2018 foreign assistance programs for the Northern Triangle,” a State Department spokesperson told ABC News, referring to U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. “We will be engaging Congress as part of this process.”
Some are arguing that these dollars are needed to curb this sort of illegal immigration. That would be a great point if there were any evidence that it was true. Since the money was allocated under Obama caravans have increased in size and frequency. It’s as if the increase in dollars lead to an increase in caravans.
