Celebrities endorse things. Quite often, later on in their careers when their agents can’t find them any decent work. But there are those that take to the endorsement bug early, probably because the paycheck is substantial, and it can raise the profile of products or services, elevating interest in the public eye.
Celebrities also like to endorse political candidates. Liberals and Democrats, mostly, because the odds of that are forever in their favor. This year the most surprising of these was Taylor Swift, a performer who could easily claim a title as one of America’s Sweethearts. Someone who had been conspicuously apolitical until the 2018 mid-terms when she endorsed a Democrat.
It didn’t help either of them.
Pop star Taylor Swift endorsed former Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, a Democrat, for the Senate. He lost. Rihanna endorsed Democrat Andrew Gillum for the Florida governorship. He lost. Oprah, Rihanna, and Sean “Diddy” Combs all endorsed Democrat Stacey Abrams for the Georgia governorship. She lost. Beyoncé endorsed Beto O’Rourke in the Texas race for the Senate. He lost.
While Democrats took the U.S. House, and won’t that be “fun” to watch, they lost seats in the U.S. Senate where they needed them most. Yes, barring any quick action by House Republicans the multiple investigations underway into Illegal surveillance and collusion between Clinton and Obama’s intelligence community will all disappear to be replaced by new ones to cover those up. The promised 10% cut to Middle-class taxes might never happen. And a host of other wish-list items for a 2019 congress will either be accelerated by the Republican Lame ducks or abandoned.
Beginning in 2019 we might see some Democrat action on promised impeachment proceedings, but they won’t go anywhere in the Senate so the real question is, can they contain themselves knowing that pushing these agenda items could actually help Trump win a second term?
And Mr. Trump will continue to get judges and appointments approved. There is potential for another Supreme Court appointment. All of which is what riles up the left the most, including celebrities.
Have at it.
