This week, Barack Obama’s campaign put out a new version of the American flag: Obama’s version.
The blue field, with stars, is replaced by the Obama campaign logo and it has the wrong number of red and white stripes (has 9 but should have 13).
First, it appears that this misuse of the American flag icon and motif violates US Code Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 3, which states:
“Any person who, within the District of Columbia, in any manner, for exhibition or display, shall place or cause to be placed any word, figure, mark, picture, design, drawing, or any advertisement of any nature upon any flag, standard, colors, or ensign of the United States of America; or shall expose or cause to be exposed to public view any such flag, standard, colors, or ensign upon which shall have been printed, painted, or otherwise placed, or to which shall be attached, appended, affixed, or annexed any word, figure, mark, picture, design, or drawing, or any advertisement of any nature;”
But let’s focus on the important issue here…
Obama, who ultimately despises what America stands for, has continually thumbed his nose at the traditions of the United States – the Pledge of Allegiance, religion and faith in general, the National Anthem, and the US Constitution – and what tradition is more sacred than our flag? It gracefully symbolizes the fifty independent states, born from the original thirteen colonies, which separated from a tyrannical Great Britain, forging the most free and successful nation in the history of mankind. It also provides the color palette of worldwide freedom and liberty: Red, White, and Blue.
Symbolism aside, our flag embodies many things to many people – very personal things – and it draws deep emotion from everyone who values this country and the opportunities is has presented us. It does this because it speaks for EVERY man and woman who has ever served and sacrificed for their beloved America and its noble ideas.
Some have sacrificed their fortunes, some limbs, some their mind, some a family, and some – the ultimate – their one and only life. Every time I see the flag, whether on a lapel pin, or flying free in the wind, I see the sweet pain and selfless sacrifice of a small group of Americans, across many generations, who have put themselves on the line and have suffered in some way for it; they live in my flag.
And then there’s Barack Obama’s version of the flag; his sordid campaign symbol, representing only himself, replacing the fifty stars, and with fewer stripes than the original, courageous colonies. He has distorted our flag, making it a statement about his Presidency – one of the most destructive in our history – and his campaign for re-election with hopes to continue the destruction.
When I saw his flag, I felt nauseous and disturbed. I felt sad for those who have served us and lost, and I cringed at the latest in a series of insults against our nation and traditions.
It is not my flag. Mine has fifty stars and thirteen stripes, and represents the best of America, not the worst.
