MACDONALD: About These Lawsuits Against Social Media Companies

The City of New York needs money, so they are suing social media companies on the grounds that their platforms are dangerous and addictive to children.

New York City filed a new lawsuit accusing Facebook, Google, Snapchat, TikTok and other online platforms of fueling a mental health crisis among children by addicting them to social media.

Wednesday’s 327-page complaint in Manhattan federal court seeks damages from Facebook and Instagram owner Meta Platforms, Google and YouTube owner Alphabet, Snapchat owner Snap and TikTok owner ByteDance. It accuses the defendants of gross negligence and causing a public nuisance.

Jackpot justice is common among the greedy, bent, or wicked. We even have it here in Live Free or Die New Hampshire, if there’s a buck to be made. NH likes to sue corporations, too, primarily for headlines, resume padding, and cash to fill holes. or hand out to friends. [Related: The NH AG’s Office Should Just Ask Meta to Write A Check]

In the case of the high-tech suits, I’m not sure how New York intends to win. If you are under thirteen, you’re not supposed to use Facebook, but Dems are adamant that abortions and sex change drugs or surgery are something they can manage just fine at this age.

And it’s not just Facebook.

Social Media PlatformMinimum AgeNotes
Facebook13Age verification may require ID for certain content.
Instagram13Users may need to verify age with ID or a selfie.
Snapchat13No strict age verification; relies on user-entered birth date.
TikTok13Age verification is not strictly enforced.
YouTube13Users may be asked to verify age with ID in certain regions.
WhatsApp13Age verification by entering birth date.
Twitter (X)13No strict age verification; relies on user-entered birth date.
LinkedIn16Primarily for professional networking.

Every one of the objects of their lawsuit restricts access to an age at which, in New York, they are not just encouraged to make life-altering medical decisions, but often with parental consent handicapped or prohibitied.

How does one make a case that their minds are not prepared for what happens on social media when they are more than able to abort babies or volunteer to have their sex parts lopped off?

I’m sure someone thought they could pull it off or did not care. There are thousands of similar cases to which New York has glommed on, all of them looking not for justice but for a payday.

Social media will be expected to add, at a minimum, a Potemkin layer of age verification, pay a fine they can all afford, and the plaintiffs will go back to using that same social media to target the same people with the same messaging, regardless of age.

It’s all for show and pointless because the one thing that does work is parenting, reinforced by a culture that supports them, of which the political left is not only incapable but abhors.
