New York’s AG has decreed that donations to non-profits over $5,000.00 be made public. Myron Magnet, writing at City Journal, had some insightful thoughts on that, then closed with this.
[James] Madison would not get the joke that the Constitution’s imagined “right to privacy” allows unrestricted abortion but doesn’t protect anonymous donations to those advocating political propositions they support. And since he believed that the freedom to believe what you want and to say so were the most fundamental of all liberties, he would throw up his hands at an Eric Schneiderman.
Lesser mortals would say, General Schneiderman, what about the Clinton Foundation?
Don’t expect New York’s AG to pursue the Clintons or any other left-wing groups running 501(c)(4)’s or their donors anytime soon That was never the point.
