After meeting with Judge Jackson and thoroughly reviewing her written materials, testimony and professional record, I have decided to cast my vote in support of her confirmation, as she is both exceptionally well-qualified and well-suited to join the Court. I am confident that she will serve with honor and distinction. Judge Jackson’s historic achievements as the first Black woman and the first former public defender to be nominated to the Supreme Court will bring much needed personal and professional diversity to the bench.
Judge Jackson is widely regarded as a brilliant jurist with a superb record of public service. She began her varied and distinguished career by clerking at all three levels of the federal court system, including for Justice Stephen Breyer. Judge Jackson currently serves on the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Additionally, she has worked in private practice, as Vice Chair of the U.S. Sentencing Commission and as an Assistant Federal Public Defender. Judge Jackson received both her undergraduate and law degrees from Harvard University. The American Bar Association (ABA) unanimously rated Judge Jackson “Well Qualified” for the Supreme Court, and she has been confirmed by the Senate on three previous occasions by bipartisan votes.
The duty of the United States Senate to advise and consent on Presidential nominations is one of its fundamental constitutional obligations and I take this responsibility very seriously. At every step of her remarkable career, Judge Jackson has earned high praise from across the ideological spectrum for her integrity, fair-mindedness, and ability to build consensus among people of widely divergent views. I know that her experience as a clerk, federal defender and judge has given her a full appreciation of the vital role that the Court plays in our democracy. Judge Jackson will be an outstanding Justice.
