America we are coming to a decision point, so: Which side are you on? Rioters and protesters tore down the monument to Francis Scott Key. He was the author of the Star-Spangled Banner, you know, our National Anthem. What was the reason for that again? Ever heard the phrase “Autres temps, autres moeurs”? It means; in other times, with other customs; in other eras people behaved differently.
Rioters and protesters tore down the statue of Father Junipero Serra. He was the founder of the Spanish Missions in California. What was the reason for that again? Did it have to do with unfocused rage today? Was it the result of ignorance? How do we benefit from erasing history? Aren’t we supposed to learn from it?
The monument to Christopher Columbus in NYC was defaced. St. Patrick’s Cathedral was defaced. The New York Museum of Natural History made the decision to remove the statue of Teddy Roosevelt. What are we thinking? Are we thinking at all?
Ignorance is bliss
It seems today’s young revolutionaries want to rewrite our history. Unless they invent a time machine how is that possible? More importantly why is it desirable? How does it advantage us? You cannot erase history; you can only learn from it or ignore it.
George Santayana wrote, “those who ignore the lessons of history are condemned to repeat it.” So, If we consciously try to erase history and rewrite it as we believe it should have been, how will we ever learn of the mistakes we made in the past so that they will not be made again?
Here’s a thought: Why not get back to teaching history instead of advocacy in schools?
America has a rich and diverse culture. We are a nation, a society, the very first built on the individual, based on freedom and self governance. America is not perfect. We have made lots of mistakes, big ones. But we learn from the mistakes and move on together, stronger for what we learn.
America is simply better than whatever is second best. The freedom America guarantees its citizens allows us to be the most creative society ever on earth. That creativity produces innovation, fosters ambition and motivates achievement. Those would be good things. They raise the standard of living of all people. Doing good things for others advances the best interests of all. It is what make America great.
Why are we allowing anarchists, socialists and punk kids with a chip on their shoulder to attack America? When did we cross the line into irredeemable evil? We are coming to an election. Elections are about choices. Which side are you on? You need to stand up and vote. Which side are you on?
