In a press release, she said that “gun massacres” increased by 183 percent after the federal ban expired in 2004. “One law can’t stop every mass shooting, but we can make them less deadly and less frequent,” she said. “These weapons of war were designed for military use and have one purpose: to kill lots of people quickly and easily. We need to take action now.”
As usual, she’s misleading.
Mass murders are not on the rise, and according to Northeastern University researchers, schools are safer today than they were in the 90’s, even after the blessed Clinton Assault weapons ban.
“…while certain policies may help decrease gun violence in general, it’s unlikely that any of them will prevent mass school shootings, according to James Alan Fox, the Lipman Family Professor of Criminology, Law, and Public Policy at Northeastern.”
“Mass school shootings are incredibly rare events. In research publishing later this year, Fox and doctoral student Emma Fridel found that on average, mass murders occur between 20 and 30 times per year, and about one of those incidents on average takes place at a school.”
For the record, the Northeaster Researchers didn’t have Carol Shea-Porter’s cherry-picked data or timeline, but if it makes Progressives feel better, they used data from sources as varied as USA Today and Everytown, to the FBI and Congressional Reseach Center.
Fridel and Fox used data collected by USA Today, the FBI’s Supplementary Homicide Report, Congressional Research Service, Gun Violence Archive, Stanford Geospatial Center and Stanford Libraries, Mother Jones, Everytown for Gun Safety, and a NYPD report on active shooters.
So this research took into consideration data provided by Bloomberg’s gun-grabbers at Everytown, and the results still demonstrate that Carol Shea-Porter is misrepresenting the truth.
There’s no such thing as an assault weapon. Gun-ban legislation in Democrat-run inner cities accounts for significantly more violent crime and death in a month than the occasional mass shooting. And while we have had two recent tragedies with above average loss of life, one from which we still know next to nothing, the fact remains that Democrats aren’t the least bit interested in body counts unless they think they can be used to disarm Americans.
Americans they promise to protect but won’t or can’t, and they know it.
