Bill O’Brien…On a Miselading Letter Sent to NH House Reps on Medicaid Expansion

medicade- Looks refreshing, but always comes back to haunt you later

So there is this letter that liberals are sending around to some state representatives this evening (not me, because I am probably a lost cause to them) trying to persuade them to vote for ObamaCare Medicaid Expansion. It is interesting to see what they are saying and then the facts:

Claim:
As a New Hampshire resident who cares about cancer, I am writing to
urge you to vote in favor of legislation that would authorize our state
to accept the federal dollars to improve access to health care coverage
for 58,000 Granite Staters.

Facts:
Actually the net increase in coverage will be many fewer than 58,000 receiving health care coverage who don’t have it now and that increase of 58,000 going into Medicaid is being achieved in large part by making private insurance unaffordable to many more who could afford it before the ObamaCare private policy mandates come into effect. Those who don’t have insurance now and will gain access to heath care coverage will do so though Medicaid, which is a dangerous way to get health care coverage; in fact it is worse than having no insurance when you go into the hospital.

Claim:
In 2013, more than 8,400 state residents will receive a cancer
diagnosis and nearly 2,700 will die from this disease. Studies show
that the uninsured are far more likely to be diagnosed with late stage
cancer, when it is much more expensive to treat and much less likely to survive.

Facts:
In New Hampshire health care services are available to those who cannot afford them both through HIPP and the reimbursement for unpaid care that critical care hospitals receive. ObamaCare is wrecking health care, and one-sixth of the national economy, to solve a problem that is not acute in New Hampshire.

Claim:
Expanding Medicaid is the right thing to do. It is a moral and a
Christian thing to do. It is also the fiscally responsible thing to do.
Those who say expanding the program will save us money in the short-run
but hurt us in the long-run have it completely backwards.

Facts:
The moral and Christian thing to do is to give away your own wealth and not assuage your feelings of elitist guilt by coercively taking money from other people (taxpayers) and giving it away to satisfy you definition of who is deserving and boost your political prospects.

Claim:
Your leadership and support on this issue will improve access to health
care coverage for hard-working, low-income families, allowing for
earlier detection of cancers and more effective, cost-efficient
treatment, which will save lives.

Facts:
The Oregon study reported in the New England Journal of Medicine directly refutes this claim. Health care outcomes were no different for randomly selected Medicaid recipients and those who didn’t receive Medicaid under a lottery program. The only difference was that those getting Medicaid for free felt good about getting something for free.

Claim:
Conversely, ignoring this issue will ensure that tax revenue meant for
New Hampshire citizens will be spent on other states who did expand
their Medicaid programs. It would be a senseless waste of potential for
our own economy and workforce.

Facts:
With a $17 trillion dollar federal debt and $128 trillion in unfunded liability, it is a “senseless waste” to further accelerate this altogether too predictable race to a financial collapse by joining those half of the states who think parochially and not nationally when they look at federal spending.

Claim:
More importantly, vote this down and I’ll make your life a living Hell.

Facts:
Democrats always make life a living Hell. http://www.snopes.com/photos/signs/grigsby.asp

Claim:
Seizing this historic opportunity, will create a healthier workforce,
boosts our economy, reduces societal costs and keeps New Hampshire
economically competitive. Voting yes on Medicaid expansion is the
right decision for the people of our state.

Facts:
Vote to expand and weaken the workforce and our economy, grow the dependent class, increase societal cost and further weaken NH’s competitiveness.
