"One clown, surplus to requirements, answers to the name “Buckles.” How about we auction him off to the readers for fundraising?" - Granite Grok

“One clown, surplus to requirements, answers to the name “Buckles.” How about we auction him off to the readers for fundraising?”

Ray Buckles Buckley

Those were the words from an acknowledged partisan who has been “in the know” that Ray Buckley, Chair of the NH Democrat Party, has been called “Buckles” for a long time here on GraniteGrok (and elsewhere in the Right of the aisle here in NH). Giving that we at GraniteGrok have been coming up with a series of “tchotchkes” as little fundraisers, our donor thought that he’d get into the act with this. However, this is no ordinary tchotchke – it is an Annalee (Thorndike) Dolls original:

Buckles the Clown

Sure, those of us in the know here in NH smile at this idea; “should I or should I not?”. Those of you outside of NH are wondering “but this is an NH political inside joke – why should I?”.

Well, take off the name tag, forget it’s a joke, and it makes for an “interesting” house decoration, a play toy for young kids, or even your grandkids.

So, let the bidding start at $50.  What am I bid to knock Buckles off his perch???

Bidding will end one week from today at 5pm.  Send your bids to Editor@GraniteGrok.com

Thus, this was a doll (either 1971 or 1972) in which Annalee would have direct input, if not ALL of the design and process, as she was certainly alive at that time. The swing itself did not come with the doll – that was an ancillary item for the doll itself. This is an 18″ doll in very good condition.

************

Full disclosure: I worked at the Annalee Doll factory as, first, a data analyst. Then I ran the factory for three months.  My stay there turned out to a very weird, long story but who else can claim they were fired by the owner’s son while he was sailing off the coast of Peru in his own “Tall Ship” rigged ship? And yes, I interacted with Annalee, Chip, Chuck, and Townsend (“Townsey”) pretty much every day (but no in the design process)
