Welfare – providing the basics

I have no problem in providing a basic safety net.  I do, however, have a problem in defining "the basics" upward to include more and more and more:

SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco has finished installing free Wi-Fi in its public housing facilities as part of a citywide housing improvement initiative.

Mayor Gavin Newsom and the San Francisco Housing Authority announced Tuesday that 33 developments are now equipped with wireless broadband.

Newsom says expanded Internet access will create job and educational opportunities and improve quality of life for residents.

I can’t WAIT to find the quantifiable metrics on how many jobs and how many opportunities will be created.

Basics: basic food stuffs – yes.  Serviceable clothes – yes.  Basic housing – yes.

All on a time limited basis (for most) rather than a way of life. Just enough to survive – not providing a way of life.

Not basics: free cable, free cars, free cell phones?  No.  Those are wants; those are beyond basics.  Yet, taxpayer monies go to fund them.
