Regular readers know that I’ve long maintained that the new world war in which we are engaged began in November, 1979 with the taking of the American embassy in Tehran. Since that time, much like the Cold War, we have not fought the enemy in an overt fashion, but instead parlay through a series of proxy skirmishes. While both sides (mostly Iran) thrust and poke each other, they are careful never to reach the point of no return. At least not yet.

From the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) comes this. Note how, much like Hitler and the Japanese of pre-WWII, the Iranians are talking peace… and war. At the same time:
Alongside intensive contacts with Saudi Arabia aimed at halting the deterioration in the Middle East and at resolving the crisis in the region, Iran has in the last three weeks also voiced increasingly severe threats to harm Western forces and interests, both in the Middle East and outside it. It has also threatened to use the "oil weapon," i.e. to stop the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz.
"Oh Doug. Stop that talk. We’re gonna have an election. We’re votin’ not to have a war ‘cuz we’re electin’ Democrats in ’08. Hillary’s gonna get us out of the war. She said so.You’ll see!"

As I noted in this previous posting, it’s probable that Iranians and their surrogates make up the largest part of the enemy we face in Iraq. At some point we are going to end up openly facing them in some sort of action. It might get hot. Throw some missiles and nuclear weapons into the mix too. Then what? Again from MEMRI:
Iranian Expediency Council Secretary Mohsen Rezai warned the U.S. of the serious consequences it could expect if it attacked Iran: "The Iranian people will deal… America 10 slaps in the face, so that it will never be able to again show a presence [in the region]…. America knows that the Iranian people is completely different from the Iraqi people and the Afghani people, and therefore Iran cannot be dealt with by means of a military strategy…"
