Some Thoughts on the Myth of School Neutrality

I just read my personal copy of the “Saving Our Children” issue of The New American. The magazine is published by The John Birch Society and this was a special edition devoted to k-12 education and the many issues that prevail in the schools.

I would urge parents, patriots, and Christian believers to buy several copies of this issue – read it themselves and please give copies to pastors and friends.

So what is going on in the schools these days? Well, apparently not very much real education but plenty of indoctrination into what third parties would have them believe. Who are those third parties and what are their agendas? The outlets that might publish this piece have standards and guidelines so I actually need to be circumspect here.

Suffice to say: Mark 9:42 “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.”

Did you know that the first modern Supreme Court case involving the Establishment Clause was Everson in 1947? At the time many city bus companies across the nation allowed kids to ride to school on their buses for free. This included kids going to Catholic schools and since tax money was involved a matter of controversy arose. The Court did not see a violation of the Constitution here but planted the seeds that would later allow it to function as a sort of national school board. It used this case to usurp power and change the whole basis for law, government, and culture from one grounded in the Judeo-Christian tradition to one grounded in atheistic humanism.

There is not much true education going on, it seems, but very large doses of indoctrination. Paul-based his teaching on marriage and family on the fact that Christ rose again. The schools teach anything but this. See Mark 9:42 above.

Interestingly the Everson Court based its decision on very little precedent because if they had they would have affirmed the Christian consensus that prevailed in Constitutional interpretation and legal theory at the founding.

But they couldn’t really avoid this altogether. The cases they actually used to plant the seeds of usurpation were cases that upheld traditional ( Judeo- Christian) notions of marriage and the family as the basis for an ordered and peaceful society. Reynolds v. United States and Davis v. Beason.

The Reynolds decision relied on a letter Jefferson wrote to the Danbury Baptist Association. They were afraid Congregationalism would become a national church. In that letter, Jefferson taught that “that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should ‘make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,’ thus building a wall of separation between Church & State. Adhering to this expression of the supreme will of the nation in behalf of the rights of conscience, I shall see with sincere satisfaction the progress of those sentiments which tend to restore to man all his natural rights, convinced he has no natural right in opposition to his social duties. “

That the schools are engaged in indoctrination is a breach of the “wall” that liberals make so much of. It is a breach of the principle that the mind should be left free – “that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions…” – see above.

The Everson Court also made use of Madison’s “Memorial and Remonstrance Against Religious Assessments.”

But this is a Christian document. We have religious freedom because the government is supposed to respect the fact that in Christian teaching worship can only be a voluntary act.   “Because we hold it for a fundamental and undeniable truth, ‘that Religion or the duty which we owe to our Creator and the manner of discharging it, can be directed only by reason and conviction, not by force or violence.’ It is the duty of every man to render to the Creator such homage and such only as he believes to be acceptable to him… Before any man can be considered as a member of Civil Society, he must be considered as a subject of the Governour of the Universe…”

Cultural elites used these principles to usurp power and supplant the Judeo-Christian tradition as the basis for culture, law, and government. How did they do it?

They used the principles of the Judeo-Christian tradition.
