No, the NH Log Cabin Republicans Don’t want to Get Government out of Marriage

Natural marriage

How does taking marriage off the NH GOP platform get the government out of marriage? In his January CNN interview, Jim Morgan, Chairman of the NH Log Cabin Republicans, outlined his strategy to remove the marriage plank from the NH GOP platform:

“Changing that marriage definition to read anything other than what it says is an insult” to religious conservatives, he tells the Young Republicans group. “What do people do when they both realize that no matter what you do, you can’t change it to make everybody happy? You just drop it.”

As former State Representative Jeffrey Oligny put it in the same article, “My question is: Why is the government involved with your personal choice?”

Many of my friends in the NH GOP repeat this mantra: “The government should have nothing to do with marriage.”

This is a hoax. The same liberal Republicans who say the state has no business in marriage fought hard a decade earlier to expand the intrusion of government into the lives of same-sex couples by lobbying for state recognition of same-sex marriage, and haven’t objected to marriage expanding to include polygamy.

If the NH Log Cabin Republicans are serious about getting the government out of marriage, why haven’t they proposing legislation to eliminate laws that protect child custody and inheritance?

Same-sex marriage isn’t about freedom.  Since states have enacted same-sex marriage laws and the Supreme Court made it the law of the land, the government has never been more involved in marriage.

Those who refuse to use their artistic skills or their facilities to celebrate same-sex marriage are dragged in front of civil rights commissions, as happened to baker Jack Phillips, or are forced to shut down their businesses, as happened with florist Barronelle Stutzman.

Christian adoption and foster agencies who insist children need mothers and fathers have been forced to shut down, leaving children with fewer resources. Christian schools are sued by employees with same-sex partners. Churches and schools that don’t believe a same-sex marriage is a marriage are being threatened with having their tax-exempt status taken away.

Far from being about freedom from government intrusion, the LGBT lobby uses same-sex marriage laws to coerce people of conscience to act against their faith and natural laws. Advocating for natural marriage – a life-long bond of one man and one woman to raise the children produced by their union – makes someone a bigot.

Removing our traditional marriage plank will do nothing to stop radicals from destroying marriage. The “get the government out of marriage” slogan is a ruse. Don’t fall for it.
