Democrats Propose a NH Sales Tax – For the Children!

Democrats propose NH Sales Tax

Governor Sununu was forced to veto a slew of bills in 2019 that would have increased or created taxes. In 2020, he’ll likely be made to do it again. Two democrats propose a NH Sales Tax of 4.3% in addition to all the other new taxes and tax increases that will inevitably reach the Governor’s desk.

This bill imposes a tax of 4.3 percent upon the receipts from the sale of taxable electronics purchased at retail in this state and directs all revenues collected by the Department of Revenue Administration (DRA) from this tax into the Education Trust Fund for Education (RSA 198:39).  The DRA states it is unable to determine the revenue the proposed tax would generate  because the department does not have reliable data on the volume or price of sales of taxable electronics in the state.

Methodology, HB1492 – Sponsored by Rep. Cleaver (Hills-35) and Rep. King (Hills-33)

Ah, so it’s for the children! Of course it is. Voting against this new smash and grab tax will inevitably get you labelled as an anti-education, anti-children, greedy, capitalist pig. Naturally. Sununu (and Republicans) were labelled as anti-worker, after all, when they opposed the FMLI income tax. The 0.5% income tax would have affected all real wages earned in New Hampshire, despite Democrat urgings that it was not a tax on income. It also would have allowed an unelected bureaucrat to increase the tax rate at their discretion.

The new 4.3% sales tax would apply to:

  • VI.  “Taxable electronics” means items of consumer electronics as follows:
  • (a)  Television sets and related equipment therefore.
  • (b)  Video games and all related play systems and equipment.
  • (c)  Smart watches and similar products and related equipment therefore.
  • (d)  Computers and related equipment, including desktop computers, tablet computers, laptop computers, printers, scanners, faxes.  This shall include all related hardware and software.
  • (e)  Cell phones and smart phones and related equipment therefore. (HB1492 – text)

Do Teslas count under VI(d)? They are, after all, just computers on wheels, and they’re evil e-cars that avoid paying gas taxes! Muh roads!

The Apple Store in the Mall of New Hampshire is reportedly one of the busiest around, because MA residents flock here to avoid the tax there. This bill would likely end that, and hurt New Hampshire workers and businesses. Which is par for the course. New Hampshire democrats frequently propose legislation that would hurt businesses and workers.

Why stop at electronic devices, though? If you’re going to go for it, go big. Or go home. Tax it all! And then, in November 2020, send these tax fiends home!

Tax his land,
Tax his bed,
Tax the table,
At which he’s fed.

Tax his tractor,
Tax his mule,
Teach him taxes
Are the rule.

Tax his work,
Tax his pay,
He works for
peanuts anyway!

Tax his cow,
Tax his goat,
Tax his pants,
Tax his coat.

Tax his ties,
Tax his shirt,
Tax his work,
Tax his dirt.

Tax his tobacco,
Tax his drink,
Tax him if he
Tries to think.

Tax his cigars,
Tax his beers,
If he cries
Tax his tears.

Tax his car,
Tax his gas,
Find other ways
To tax his ass.

Tax all he has
Then let him know
That you won’t be done
Till he has no dough.

When he screams and hollers;
Then tax him some more,
Tax him till
He’s good and sore.

Then tax his coffin,
Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in
Which he’s laid…

Put these words
Upon his tomb,
‘Taxes drove me
to my doom…’

When he’s gone,
Do not relax,
Its time to apply
The inheritance tax.
