Union Leader takes Aim at Free Staters

NH Union Leader

The Manchester Police Department is not a fan of the Free State Project, and has not kept it a secret. More often than not, the Free Staters have been known to ‘best’ the MPD in Court for violation of their rights. MPD now asks all applicants “are you now, or have you ever been a member of the Free State Project.” McCarthyism is alive and well, friends. The Union Leader takes aim at Free Staters now, too.

In not one, but two editorials this weekend they’ve taken both shots at the FSP.

The Free State Project, for those unaware, is “a movement of thousands of freedom-loving people to New Hampshire, where we are working to reduce the size and scope of government in order to achieve Liberty in Our Lifetime. Our efforts have the potential to demonstrate the benefits of liberty and to set an example for the rest of the nation and the world to follow.”

In other words, they’re one of the few groups actually doing something to achieve more liberty, shrink the size and role of government, and preserve rights.

‘Sobriety Checkpoints’ or ‘Anything Checkpoints’?

Police Departments in New Hampshire will often set up so-called ‘Sobriety Checkpoints.’ The goal, of course, is to scan drivers passing through for apparent intoxication and get those dangerous drivers off the road. Prevent tragedy, if you will. But, these checkpoints are anything but effective.

Related: Sobriety Checkpoints Violate our Rights

One prime example, from 2014, shows that a “sobriety checkpoint” waylaid 556 drivers. 9 were arrested for driving under the influence. Eight others were arrested for something not intoxication related. 539 drivers were ‘innocent’ (the cops didn’t catch them in violation of any laws, though there is zero doubt that all 556 were guilty of some violation or another.) So, 539 had their rights infringed on while traveling freely inside the borders of their own state.

Free Staters are known to ‘protest’ these stops. They will wave signs warning drivers of the upcoming sobriety checkpoint, they’ll video tape from the sidewalk. Some may take things a step further.

Who’s Rights Are They?

The United States Government was formed to defend your rights. Yes, they’re YOUR rights. Not those of the Government or its enforcement arm, the police. Don’t forget, the police work for you.

The Union Leader, however, is more than willing to cede your rights to the police state.

When people interfere with such a check, as they have done in Manchester by warning drivers to turn around or to take another route, they are not doing the public any favors. Nor are the taxpayers well-served when they have to pay to settle lawsuits because an officer made the wrong decision by arresting one of these yahoos.

Union Leader Editorial, 11/16/19

“Nor are the taxpayers well-served when they have to pay to settle lawsuits…” because the cops f***ed up. Maybe, just maybe, those officers should stop violating the rights of citizens. You know, the basic ones. Right to assemble, right to petition, right of free speech. “Because an officer made the wrong decision by arresting one of these yahoos.” Yahoos.

Yep, if you believe in your inalienable rights you’re a yahoo. Especially if you are a member of the Free State Project.

Grin and Bear It

In a completely unrelated editorial, the Editor of the Union Leader takes Aim at Free Staters once again. It appears the Merrimack Police Department had to shoot a bear after it attacked someone’s goat.

The Editor laments, as the closing line, that “It’s just lucky for the police that there were no Free Staters in the area to hold up signs telling residents to bear false witness to the fuzz if asked about the bear’s whereabouts.” (Union Leader, 11/17/19)

So, you know, if you don’t like the Police State violating your rights – just Grin and Bear It.
