Does Golden Globes Ratings Collapse Prove Hollywood Hasn’t Figured it Out Yet?

Golden Globe Trophy - and no one bashed Donald Trump

The Golden Globes was on Sunday night. No, I didn’t watch it either. I didn’t even know it was (and did not care) and was not alone in that sentiment. The annual event lost 60% of its viewers compared to last year.

Another parade of famous (and not so famous) people prattling and preaching if they could be heard at all, to nearly no one. It makes you wonder who’s running the joint.

While Ricky Gervais injected a welcome note of irreverence in past broadcasts, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler made a point of spotlighting diversity as they hosted the show from opposite coasts.

The Globes faced criticism this year following a report that the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. doesn’t have any black voters among its 87 members. Celebrities including Sacha Baron Cohen and Mark Ruffalo further alienated viewers by delivering political lectures during their acceptance speeches, despite Fey’s promise that the show would avoid politics.

We shall take this as a sign of things to come for future awards shows.

Fast national ratings — which aren’t fully time zone-adjusted and not entirely accurate — show NBC’s broadcast averaging just 5.42 million viewers and a 1.2 rating in the key ad demographic of adults 18-49.

Both are down more than 60 percent from the preliminary figures from last year (14.76 million and 3.8). The 2020 Golden Globes, which aired in early January and had an NFL playoff game as a lead-in, averaged 18.33 million viewers and a 4.7 in the 18-49 demographic in the finals.

They are in “good” company. NFL ratings are down as well, and with Award season just beginning, this is probably a trend that will continue.

The Critics Choice Awards are March 7th, the Grammy’s are on March 14th, and there are four more awards shows in April.

We’d expect a decline in viewers and ratings across the board because people are bored with the privileged class, though that is ironic.

The country elected* the privileged class into power, and the media mecca of California is lockdownistan. Trapped as you are, the least you could do is watch their financial backers pander to each other and hand out trophies.

But no, even with less or less than nothing to do they are not worth your time or attention. A message the entertainment industry should take to heart. I know they still make money but they could make more if the product (the awards show itself) were not so dismal.

Maybe they need to be more like the Country Music Awards. I hear their ratings are still good.
