Report from India: Coronavirus May Have Started in Chinese Prison Camps

The latest bit of bad news before this one is from South Korea where there are now over 600 confirmed cases. The CDC says the US has 14 confirmed cases but a different source puts the number at 35. China reports 79,000 cases but that number is suspect. So, what’s the deal with this report form India?

The coronavirus epidemic in China appears to have started from the cramped prison system, possibly at internment facilities in Xinjiang, according to media reports and social media posts.

China’s Ministry of Justice officials on Friday said that more than 500 prisoners in five prisons in three provinces had contracted the virus which has so far sickened almost 80,000 people and killed more than 2,000 people, mostly in China.

Without getting into a debate about what these “facilities” actually do (reeducation, forced labor, experimentation) they are reported to cramped, crowded, dirty places where the Coronavirus would spread rapidly and has.

The World Uyghur Congress tweeted, “The #coronavirus #COVID19 is spreading rapidly in cruise ships and prisons, where people are confined in close quarters. Millions of #Uyghurs detained in internment camps are at serious risk of infection. The CCP must #ClosetheCamps now, before it is too late.”

Given the scope of this infection and the limited resources, I doubt the Chinese government is going to invest much if any time addressing an outbreak in a prison but the reporting suggests otherwise.

Prisons across China had been ordered to step up monitoring of all prison guards and officers to “prevent the spread of the virus into prison premises”. The Ministry of Justice had sent 28 teams to prisons across the country to ensure compliance, said a report by South China Morning Post. (ANI)

Which is confusing. If the infections began in a prison, then why would they need to send teams to monitor prisons to make sure it does not?
