South Carolina was Joe Biden’s lifeline: If he didn’t do well here, he would be toast, but it looks like James Clyburn’s endorsement has kept the African-American vote “on the plantation.”**
Early returns suggest that Biden is cleaning up with about 50% of the vote, followed by Bernie Sanders with around 19% of the vote – enough to get his share of the delegates.
Surprise third place went to Tom Steyer – I guess his TV spots did not annoy enough people there to put him at the bottom of the heap, but 11% won’t get him any delegates. STOP PRESS – Steyer drops out after SC primary.
Further down, Petey gets nothing for his 8%, nor Lizzy for her 7%, nor Amy for her 3%. I agree with Steve that Warren and Klobuchar are done, even with Warren taking PAC money now, but Booty-Judge might last another round or two before he’s gone.
** James Clyburn (in)famously said to Neil Cavuto on Feb 19th: “I’m saying that the African-American unemployment is not the lowest it’s ever been unless you count slavery, We were fully employed during slavery. So it all depends how you measure this up.”
