Precipitation Estimate for Hermine Through Monday

It is always subject to change, but as of mid-week, this is the total precipitation forecast for Hermine through Monday night. The tight gradient means that a track farther out to sea would mean less rain, and a track closer to the coast would mean much more rain. A shift east and we get less, west and … Read more

MacDonald: In Drought or Not In Drought, That Is The Question

Hamlet’s famous soliloquy ponders mortality through the filter of our insufferable experience, littered with brief moments of joy versus the mystery of what awaits us in death. Or, something like that. The inner voice explores existential crisis. In keeping with my impromptu (as in unplanned) climate content Friday, while reporting this morning on the demise … Read more

MacDonald: So Much For Poseidon’s Revenge

It’s almost Summer. That means another apocalyptic season of Biblical proportions. Or is it another season of biblical apocalypses? Boiling seas, all manner of tempests, raining fire, swarms of frogs, hell like infernos, and (of course) rising seas that swallow the sinners, Noah-like but with some dry land left to which true believers may cling. … Read more

“Make Big Oil Pay!” Flounders

While it’s true a majority of Vermonters love the hypothetical (and fantastical) notion of our little state saving the planet from climate change by going “net zero” or some such thing, it’s also true that an even larger majority has absolutely net zero interest in paying for (or living with) the programs designed to do … Read more

Is It Drought Season Yet?

You’ll get different answers depending on who you ask. I’m referring to the two-season jokes: winter and Construction, winter and bugs, Pumpkin Spice and everything else. I’m sure I’ve missed a few, but drought season is one of my favorite topics. I don’t like droughts, but my town has been acting like we’ve been in … Read more

50 Year-Old Science Forgotten to Peddle Global Warming

NewScientist, which I take to mean they peddle the new scientism, got some help from Google the other day. They have an article about the Jetstream that was pushed to the top of the news feed. It posits the notion that your emissions broke it. The problem with the new science is that the old … Read more

Is It Drought Season Yet?

Water, water everywhere, but get ready for odd, even watering bans. Yes, spring has sprung like a stripper from a giant cake as the whores in government line up to spring regulatory speed bumps at our summertime fun. Will water bans be part of it? Is the Pope a Marxist?

Night Cap: Woodpeckers, Pine Cones, and Morning ‘Duty’

Living in rural New Hampshire, even where the flatlanders roam, is very different from most urban settings. Most of America is like that, truly, so I’m not speaking to a fringe audience. But this is a group who, if not familiar with city living, has (hopefully) forgotten how different it is. For example, I live … Read more

The Ghost of The Son of The Bride of the Wonky Jetstream

Between 1931 and 1944, we got Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, the Son of Frankenstein, The Ghost of Frankenstein, Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman, and House of Frankenstein. A name pronounced incorrectly for decades until Gene Wilder straightened us out in Mel Brooks, Young Frankenstein.

Don’t Be Fooled by “Global Average Temperature”

Last week was a banner week for climate crisis headlines. Washington Post: “The world is hotter than it’s been in thousands of years.” AP: “For the third time this week, Earth sets unofficial heat record.” Politico: “Scientists are freaking out about surging temperatures.”

Our Systemic Lack of Drought

Early in the year, I prepped the battlespace for what typically happens around New England. Everyone yells “drought” and “climate change!” But by year’s end, we have our average annual precip or more. This year has been wet. You could say there’s been a systemic lack of drought.
