Last week we shared news about the Stanford IT department speech police issuing a language guide. For the good of the community until they walked it back the next day (something about the backlash after the Wall Street Journal took it wide) /snicker.
When UNH created its Bias-freeLanguage Guide, we wrote stories that went national. Then UNH President Mark Huddleston made it disappear and talked about the University’s commitment to free and open speech.
My first thought when I see “bias language” anything is the National Embarrassment of the UNH BiasFree Langauge Guide. But when I heard this about the FED, my first thought was, “cool, no Critical Race Theory (CRT)!”
While researching the post on the potential for Chinese influence at UNH I stumbled over an article about some National Science Funding that I wrote a few years ago. The University of New Hampshire received $999,752 to “create a “bias awareness guide and intervention tool.”
The Amherst College Office of Diversity and Inclusion released a ‘common language document‘ for all of its students this past week. If you are guessing that it was not at all diverse and exclusionary you’d be correct. A problem that led to the office reversing course within days.
Two years ago, in July of 2015, the University of New Hampshire made national news over a Bais-Free Language guide which suggested, among other things, that the word ‘American’ is problematic.
