UN Environment Chief’s Oversized Carbon Footprint

If you’re going to educate the world about the dangers of carbon dioxide you’re going to have to emit some carbon dioxide, right? And that’s not just from talking.

A draft internal audit, obtained by the Guardian and seen by the BBC, says that Erik Solheim’s actions risked the reputation of UN Environment. The report says he incurred costs of $488,518 (£373,557) while traveling for 529 out of 668 days.

So, Solheim isn’t just the head of the UN’s ministry of magic, he’s also a “client.”

The pattern of travel among senior management, said the auditors, was contrary to the ethos of carbon emission reduction. The report highlighted the former UN Secretary General’s statement that “what we demand of others, we must do ourselves.”

He can now tidy up his department and claim to have done a bang-up job lowering global carbon emissions by lowering his own.
