There is More than One Price to Pay for Letting Democrats back into Power

Democrats have made no secret of their plans to raise taxes. Left-wing leaders at both the Federal and State level are running on erasing tax reform. Here in New Hampshire, candidates for Governor and State Senator as well as other state elected offices are looking to roll back tax cuts on job creators even though the state has experienced record high employment and labor force participation.

All at a time when the evidence suggests that people with the most mobility are migrating to states with lower tax burdens.

Veronique de Rugy writes,

Using 2016 data from the Internal Revenue Service, he finds that 578,269 people moved, on net, from the 25 highest-tax states to the 25 lowest-tax states. That’s a loss of $33 billion in aggregate income for these vacated states. In that year, 24 of the 25 highest-tax states suffered from net out-migration. The only high-tax state that saw in-migration was Maine.

New Hampshire Democrats aren’t just looking to put the pinch on your employer – which will impact your wages, hours, and perhaps even your jobs, they are lobbying the state to promote a broad-based tax scheme. Under cover of “local property taxes are too damn high,” they promise that if elected, they will work as hard as they can to lower property taxes but that is a lie. Democrats never want to lower taxes. What they do want is to centralize this abuse in Concord.

The left feels certain it can sell this poison pill if they coat it with the sweet nectar of education adequacy. School funding. Relying on local property taxes is unfair.

Do you want to know what’s unfair? Robbing local taxpayers of local control. Every dollar you pull out of towns and cities to launder through the state capital is a loss of local control. Where you previously went to a town official to question the fiscal abuses you endure, Democrats want to force you to travel to the State Capital. People in the North Country should be pissed. And not just because you have to drive a few hours. While your one State Senator or House Rep might care the rest of them need not listen. It’s a wasted trip.

So the only thing being “relieved” will be your wallet of more taxes because the Left is telling us they want of our money and if we elect them they will accept that as our permission to take it. And they will take a lot of it.

Step one. Estimate insanely high revenues and then spend them all in the budget.

Step two. Raise dozens of taxes and fees to find the money to cover the deficit they created.

Step three. Rinse, lather, and repeat.

We’ve been there already.

There is no limit to the amount of your money they will spend. And this is exactly the opposite of the prescription for success in education or growth in our state or our economy.

Young workers who are more mobile are choosing states where they get to keep more of what they earn. Higher earners will choose these states as well as bringing job experience and investment capital to local communities. Recent changes to deductions for local taxes only make that migration more likely because no one likes to pay taxes, not even Democrats.

But it took Republicans to give you Tax reform and tax cuts at both the State and national level. The result is more of everything, including, ironically, revenue to towns and states. More economic freedom relates to more dollars in the free market. The money you and I earn that we then spend on things important to us, our families, our businesses, our employees.

The left wants to erase all that. They prefer a return to more coercive revenue generation where they take it (more of it and more often) and spend it on whatever matters most to them. And in New Hampshire, this should matter more than anything else. As a  Dillon’s Rule State, local governments may only exercise powers granted to them by the state legislature. This means that every authority you currently have that you give away will not likely be returned.

So, yes, there is a cost for letting Democrats back into power. It will never go down in price. And the loss of local control will be difficult if not impossible to get back. So, don’t give it to them.
