After Action Report: ‘Grok MeetUp at the Londonderry Fish and Game Club yesterday

“…and the whole screen goes blue…the tannerite was so hot it shifted the colors..everything else was that cool in comparison…”

Well, the skies were clear, a nip of autumn was in the air (but still short sleeve weather for most), the smell of hot dogs (DANG – I forgot to bring my chili!) and hamburgers was in the air.  And the firing of guns – including some sub-machine guns and a couple of belt-fed .30 (and was one a .50?) kept the background atmosphere perfect for talks about politics.  Lots of subjects but especially that of the recent Primary election results and talk of what might happen in the General Election.  Especially since Republican candidate for US Congress in the Second District Steve Negron and family showed up. In all, about 15 – 20 folks showed up in total – I was a bit disappointed hoping that the LFGC gun ranges might have enticed a few more folks but hey, that’s how it goes!

Oh, that image above?  From commenter Allen’s SEEK IR camera attachment?  The video of me

taking the shot (actually, two shots – and given I haven’t shot at all for about 3 years wasn’t bad at all.  Thanks to the guy that lent me his Bushmaster AR-15 (loved the Leupold scope!) in order to fire it off :

you hit the tannerite at about 1:09 and the whole screen goes blue…the tannerite was so hot it shifted the colors..everything else was that cool in comparison…I got a screenshot of the BOOM (screenshot top of post)..you can still see the back of your head but compared to the tannerite you were pretty cold..

THANK YOU! That’s pretty cool!

It’s obvious that the range of it is rather short – the explosion of the tannerite (1:09-1:1:10) was probably MUCH hotter than what I am (or for that matter, the white line that is in front of me – either the wood of the platform or the line of placed rock on the ground). Uncovering the cap on the scope gave an unexpected hot spot as well (0:10). The perceived thermal differences on the target (the metal stand, the wood stand, and the target itself) was unexpected as well.

All in all – pretty cool. And to think that’s just a $150 add-on for a smartphone? Way cool!

Note: also had the chance to use my Springfield XD-M 9mm. Given, again, the long three year lapse in trigger time, not bad groupings on a silhouette target at 7 yards.  Guess I need to restart my membership(s) – I had forgotten how much fun this is! Also shot Grokster Rick’s Glock 17 – even closer groupings.  Hmmmmm
