"It’s a timeless question: where do a school’s responsibilities begin, and where do they end?" - Granite Grok

“It’s a timeless question: where do a school’s responsibilities begin, and where do they end?”

“This is especially relevant when considering where to draw the line between what constitutes parents’ responsibilities and a school’s.”

Wouldn’t it be great if NH schools had this outlook on who is responsible for what, and what the school’s boundaries are?  In the context of that question, I remind you that my soon-to-be daughter in law, while taking her teaching classes, was told by the professor “don’t trust the parents” – a theme I have heard AND seen a lot lately that seem to believe that OUR kids are really theirs via a collectivist outlook of “it takes a village” (so they belong to the village).

Thus, this came as a great relief – a school that knows its place and its mission:

School - we teach academics but only reinforce the education from parents

FYI – this is not from an American school – it is from abroad: “A Portuguese school decided to clarify the matter once and for all, by sticking a poster in its halls- and the message they’re sending is now spreading like wildfire. ” Contrast that from what an American school just did:

A New Jersey school district (Lacey, NJ) that allegedly suspended two high school students this week over a gun photo taken during a family visit to a private shooting range is facing community backlash and the threat of a lawsuit over district policies. The photo of four rifles, magazines and a gun duffel bag was shared by one of the students on the social media app Snapchat with the caption “fun day at the range,” according to Lacey Township resident Amanda Buron, a family friend of one of the students. A screen capture of the image made the rounds among other students and later brought to the attention of Lacey Township High School officials. Buron said the students received a five-day in-school suspension for violating the school’s policy on weapons possession.

…The Association of New Jersey Rifle & Pistol Clubs letter cited the rule stating students could be suspended for up to a year if they are “reported to be in possession of a weapon of any type for any reason or purpose on or off school grounds.”

I get the “in loco parentis” when kids are in class or on school grounds but that policy basically says to parents “butt out, you must raise OUR kids to OUR standards – or else”. This, when broken down, is The State telling parents that all kids ARE our kids.  We don’t care what you say, what you feel, or what you think about the kids you created, birthed, and have legal responsibilities for.  Our policies trump all that – stick it where the sun don’t shine”.

Frankly, if I was one of the parents, I’d be hiring Evan Nappen in a heartbeat and then laughing all the way to the bank.
