The Disingenuous Misrepresentation of Free Speech

Diversity Speech police“Paint me” like one of your Trotskyite ‘girls.’

“…from time to time, American colleges and universities are subject to witness hate speech or activity that is disguised as free speech. Such has been the case in recent weeks at several colleges and universities in San Antonio and throughout Texas.

As members of the Higher Education Council of San Antonio (HECSA), we — the presidents of colleges and universities throughout this community and supporters — feel that it is important for us to speak out and make a distinction between diversity of thought and disingenuous misrepresentation of free speech. We further attest that hate speech has no place at our colleges and universities. Inappropriate messages, banners and flyers that are meant to provoke, spread hate, or create animosity and hostility, are not welcome or accepted.”

Warning! Danger Will Robinson, Danger!

Using your perch of power and influence to control what people of voting age (or earlier) should see and hear? How far are we from the same people using their perch of power and influence to control that for which people can vote? It can’t come soon enough if you are a liberal. Just look back to the rejection of Hillary Clinton and the reaction of the progressive Ruling Class establishment.

Our “betters” want America constrained like the typical college campus. A scary, Orwellian template where dissenters are silenced by intimidation or force and unelected Human rights committees and diversity councils pass judgment with the full force of law.

It’s incremental Marxism.

In the early stages, all you need is to get the pieces into place. Once created they can be empowered (triggered?) at any time by the right people to operate with the same priorities as the campus radicals who programmed them into the culture.

We’re not immune in the New Hampshire. The so-called Live Free or Die State already has them.

Governor Sununu has just happily signed “an executive order establishing the Governor’s Advisory Council on Diversity and Inclusion, and the formation of a new Civil Rights Unit at the New Hampshire Department of  Justice.”

Diversity and Inclusion programs on campuses are responsible for speech codes, infringing on religious liberty and free association, compelled speech, and more. Complete with a disciplinary committee, which in the case of New Hampshire, is the State Attorney General’s office. What could go wrong?

Call it public relations or good graces or aisle crossing (caving?) or just resume padding but who among us is naive enough to think that some future governor and their Attorney General won’t find a way to use the state DoJ as a hammer for the Advisory Council on Diversity and Inclusion? A council that can’t help but increasingly sees everything it finds personally distasteful as a nail?

And wouldn’t it be ironic if one day, in the “not distant enough future,” our first Republican governor in more than a decade got credit for arming the bureaucracy with what amounted to a Ministry of thought?

Laugh now. Not much on college campuses is considered ‘funny’ anymore. And the reality of it is that at some point even if you support such nonsense you or someone you know or care about will say or think the wrong thing.

History tells us this is true and living in denial won’t make it different “this time around.”
